I want something that looks, sounds, and is mean, but no bigger the .308 in semi-auto, what rifle and caliber should I get, and under $650?

Are you concerned with any other factors than aesthetics such as reliability or accuracy?

$650 in the world of EBRs is getting tight if you want anything other than an AK. You could get:

Saiga conversion (maybe)-- An AK in 7.62x39, 5.56 or .308

Vector AK.. 7.62x39

Lancaster Consulting AK 7.62x39

Going cheaper, you could get a Century WASR AK 7.62x39 and have some left over for ammo.

You may be albe to get a stock AR (5.56) for somewhere around that if you didn't want an AK.

how close is the 6.8 to the 30-06?

FAR away.

30-06 is 7.62x63mm. I *Think* 6.8 Remington SPC is 6.8x42mm. 308 would be the closest you'd get to 30-06-- it is 7.62x51mm

6.8 is STILL an intermetiate caliber.

EDIT:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/6.8_mm_Remington_SPC

The 6.8 mm Remington SPC (or 6.8x43mm) is a new rifle cartridge that was developed with collaboration from individual members of US SOCOM.[2] Based upon the .30 Remington cartridge [3], it is midway between the 5.56x45mm NATO and 7.62x39mm in energy, bore diameter, and velocity. It is particularly adaptable to current 5.56 mm NATO firearms.

It has ballistics similar to the 1950's era .280 British but the 6.8 mm has a smaller case due to improved powders. The 6.8 mm SPC (Special Purpose Cartridge) has a muzzle velocity in the 2,400 feet per second (730 m/s) range from a 16 inch (406 mm) barrel using a 115-grain bullet.

oh, how accurate is the 300 whisper?

I don't know many who use it. But considering that you are using a heavy 30 caliber bullet in a case that will fit in an AR magwell, you have very little powder behind it. You won't have a rifle with a great deal of range. And then you have a hard-to-get-affordably caliber.

Here is something on 300 Whisper:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.300_Whisper

The .300 Whisper (also known as .300 Fireball or .300-221) is a wildcat cartridge in the Whisper family, a group of cartridges developed in the early 1990s by J.D. Jones of SSK Industries. It was developed as a multi-purpose cartridge, capable of utilizing relatively lightweight bullets at supersonic velocities as well as heavier bullets (200-250 grains) at subsonic velocities.

Almost sounds like a good candidate for a WASR-10, cheap ammo in 7.62x39. About as accurate as any Yugo, AK, or SKS I've fired.

so if I get an AR I should stick with 5.56,

Not necessarily. If you want to shoot affordably, then yes. However, I DO like what I have seen from 6.8SPC. It seems to be a great AR platform caliber between 5.56 and 7.62 NATO. I like something that fills that gap. I will probably get an upper in 6.8 at some point in the future for a "Brush" Deer rifle.

But for cheap shooting, 5.56 would be cheaper than either 6.8 or 7.62 NATO.
