VAULTEK LifePod 2.0

Then I saw in my Colion Noir email that he sells these for pretty much the same price as Amazon and shipping is free. Another appeal is the accessories you can get.

Anyone have any experience with these? Stats an reviews look good (A bit of tape over the reset button inside the case should stop pesky youtubers from resetting the code).

All it took for me was one safe to have an electronic failure to not trust them. I have always used something that had a backup entry. This has one so that is a plus in my book. I would much rather have an electronic free Simplex or key lock for a storage option. I would rather have the added time of using a code or key than the long problem of an electronic failure.

In my travels I use one myself. I've had 3 fail. 3 brands. Lol. I won't have one that doesn't have a key to over ride it. None took more than a Leatherman and determination to get into to.

I also have a biometric that will open if you touch anything to it. So I pulled the battery and just use the key on it. It was very nice while it worked.

Satisfied with my smaller LifePod for occasional travel.
Have the newer version that is Lockpicking Lawyer proof.

Pro Tips:
1. Insert new battery when changing smoke detector batteries.
2. Label keys if you own multiple LifePods and keep safe.
3. Consider your likely/typical use when selecting colors.

It’s plastic isn’t it? Would you want it to deter theft or just organize some stuff in say a backpack or luggage?

Seems like a good size for traveling, but an expensive one for that.

Electronic… that would be No for me.

They always have “refurbished” products for sale. That means it didn’t work for the first person that bought it. ;)

+1000 on not trusting electronics for this. Had gun safes fail, and also (among other things) I design service tools for service high reliability industrial electronics, get deep in the weeds on some of this and... it's all awful and very low reliability.

I got Simplex locks for my arms room and gun cage, secure the ready-to-use carbine in the bedroom with a pushbutton padlock sold for the blind (same principle, push button code but all mechanical).

Would love a pushbutton-code portable handgun safe for travel (gun and documents, etc) but can't find a mechanical one, so don't trust.

These containers are definitely not designed to be secure as a bank vault.
The compact LifePod 1.0 and bigger LifePod 2.0 are both sleek and lightweight.
Certainly sufficient for weather protection or placing inside a hotel room safe.

The main reason no one is making that is price. Most people want to spend under $100 for a portable safe and my cost on a Simplex lock is about $65. Also, the generation that's looking to secure handguns while they are making and raising babies only want electronic gadgets because they are so comfortable with them, at least until they have one fail and realize with guns it's not the same as your TV suddenly not working.

I would make them if I thought there was a market and add the Simplex lock. I had a Traveler model several years ago that was a clamshell style that was made from 11GA steel and used the same Camlock T8 high security key lock that I use on my other model safes as an option to increase security to The Simplex lock by being able to deadbolt the latch when needed. I offered a bracket to mount it or a heavy duty 5/16”x4’ cable to secure it.

The people that bought them loved it and many have even asked for additional ones, but I couldn't make any profit on them at approx. $150.00. The Simplex lock and 200% current price increase on steel would price even higher today and be too expensive for most.

Here's what mine looked like.

Very nice, indeed! Hopefully conditions improve so a travel safe like that is a possibility again someday. My anticipation is that most users of a very small safe are cabling it inside a car trunk or putting it inside a hotel room safe when traveling…so the "form factor" is certainly a component of the decision.

Locks & lockable devices are just to keep the honest, honest. A real determined thief can get into just about anything anywhere.

I don't take issue with handgun safes that aren't especially secure. I use one at my bedside to keep my EDC handgun secure while I'm asleep. Nobody is going to attack the safe without waking me up. I could also use one when I need to store a handgun in a vehicle like parked just off the post office property. A thief would have to break into the car and then attack the handgun safe before someone noticed. My homeowner's insurance would cover the loss (except the vehicle damage, which would depend on comprehensive auto coverage).

For me, the bigger deal is that most of these handgun safes are too small. I like full-size guns, long barrels and optical sights and a lot of these won't fit all that.

I agree, especially when you can just pick it up and take it. There isn’t one in existence that I couldn’t get into if I took it out to the shop.

My wife and I each have one that looks like this.

Easy to quickly get into in the dark and there is a red led that blinks when you open it, if the battery is near the end of its life. This is when you change the battery to avoid needing to use the back up key.

When I put an optic on my firearm, it didn't occur to me that I would have to upgrade my vehicle storage. Because the optic didn't seem to add that much extra size. Until I went to the courthouse one day and couldn't fit my handgun in the box under the seat. I shopped around and found a bigger lock box that fits my Walther Q4 (4.5" barrel) with optic and light, as well as the spare magazine too. Unless you are carrying a large frame revolver or a Desert Eagle, this should fit yours too.

I had one similar to that years ago for bedside storage. Unless they fixed it, I found that many boxes of that type have a critical flaw. The lock bar is connected to the motor by a spinning wheel of finely spun steel. So when you put in the combination the motor turns and it pulls on the lock bar to open the door. When the motor stops the bar and lock reset. The weakness is in the finely spun steel cable. After a few years of daily use, that cable snapped and it was no longer pulling on the lock bar. Thankfully, how they designed the backup key I could still get it open that way until I got a different storage option.

I would sure like to find a 'one and done' tsa approved case that is big enough for my commander and three mags+ammo. Small enough to fit in my normal suitcase.

I bought one at tractor supply that had a combination lock. It was either faulty or I accidentally broke it just looking at it when I got home with it....not too secure....I could have broken into it with my bare hands.

My one and done is an older, discontinued Plano case. I have easily flown with 3 handguns, magazines, and ammo boxes inside. My favorite thing about it is it doesn't look like a gun case, more like a tablet or small laptop case. And it has a lot more metal than other cases made today. I wish they still made this case, I would easily grab another just to have it on hand.
