I picked up a K-Kale turkish mauser from an estate. I thought about selling it but I also thought about having a custom rifle built.

I am not a bolt action guy so I'm looking for ideas.

If you had this gun and somewhat limited funds, what would you build? Wild ideas welcome.

What are the limitations of the action? Who makes good accessories? Tell me what I need to know.

Thanks

6.5 x 55 is always a nice classic to do. I have done about 5 on the K Kale action and 2 on a regular 98 surplus action with no problems on any of them except I had to massage the feed rails on one 98 action for smooth feeding. Archie mentioned the 7x57 and that is also another classic chambering that is nice. My Customs Agent buddy built what I call a stalking rifle on a 98 action in 6.5x55 with nice wood and iron sights, wish I had pic's as it turned out super nice as he is a little OCD about things.

The bolt face of an 8x57mm Mauser - as your Turk should be - will fit (without alteration) most any cartridge called XXx57mm Mauser. It is also the same head size as the .30-06, .308 Winchester and variants thereof. The classic 6.5x55mm Swede head size requires a slightly larger rim diameter. The action is likely strong enough for any of the belted magnums, but requires alteration of the bolt face, and length of action and magazine may be too short.

I keep having dreams about such a rifle (with sexy wood stock and better sights) in 7x57mm.

I suppose if you cannot live with stock military config, the idea I've been kicking around for the next milsurp Mauser with a trashed bore is to try the Rhineland .45 ACP carbine conversion kit:

Firearms News (formerly Shotgun News) ran a series about home gunsmithing one of these kits some years back. The .45 ejector looks a bit weird but otherwise it turned into a really neat looking carbine when completed.

Correct me if Im wrong, but I think many Turkish mausers are large ringe 98 mausers that have small ring mauser Barrel threads. Just do a little research or pull your barrel/measure before you order a new one.
