I've come across a S&W .38 spl that's supposed to be a "Chiefs Special". Under the crane is a number 31899 and a S stamped. The S/N is 50675. Any input on this will be appreciated.

A S&W five shot .38 Special with exposed hammer is a Chief's Special.
The serial numbers in SCSW are not great but I would place your gun about 1954.

The number under the yoke is a factory fitting number with no significance after completion. The S is probably an inspector or assembler stamp.

Pictures would be helpful in pinning it down.

Thanks! I guess I'm going to have to buy a camera one day. All I have now is a 35MM I bought in Nam.

I used to rail against cell phone cameras which produced really lousy pictures, but the newer ones are very good and with even moderate care can turn out pics as good as those of common stand-alone digital cameras. And with a USB cable and an appropriate software driver, it is pretty easy to download the pics to your computer. Alternately, pics can be transmitted to the computer on line.

Neither does my iPad Air.

I just email the photos to myself and drag them into my P/C photo album.
