Identity and Date of Manufacture of S&W Revolvers

Your Model 686-4 Distinguished Combat Magnum Stainless was manufactured between August 1994 (BRFxxxx) & January 1996 (CAMxxxx). Based on the rate of serial number usage leading up to that period I would guestimate early 1995.
 
Thanks Radagast. I knew it had to be around that time. Apparently this was part of group of 686's that were previously used by a European police force. It shows some holster wear but other than that seems to be is really good shape.

Quite likely. There was a 4 inch round butt export model around that time. Product code was 104281. Apart from the US Customs CS1 all of the four inch barrel guns up to that point were square butt. The square butt frame was deleted in 1996. So 1995 as a special order export gun seems likely.

With some magnum ammo it is possible for the primer to flow back into the firing pin bushing, locking the cylinder. Under the recalll S&W will pay shipping both ways and install a new firing pin and bushing. Modified guns are stamped with an M beside the model number under the cylinder yoke. If you want to have your gun modified give S&W a call.

Your Model 629-1 .44 Magnum Stainless was manufactured in 1988. Your gun predates the 1989 Endurance package designed to reduce timing wear, so I would limit use of full house magnums to prolong the guns life.

Your Model 686-5 Distinguished Combat Magnum Plus was manufactured in late 1998. Guns in the CDBxxxx range shipped in January 1989.

Model has the wide Target Hammer and Trigger. Super smooth action and the trigger is sweet in SA and DA. Any Date info would be great (as well as any other info). Much appreciated.

Your Model 15-2 Combat Masterpiece was manufactured in 1966. The wide hammer was a factory standard configuration, the wide trigger trigger wasn't. Your gun may have been special ordered or it may have been retrofitted. If the grips are original there will be an uncheckered diamond around the grip screws.

Awesome thanks for that. the gun is one year younger than i am. I had a look and its got the M stamped where you said itd be, so thats something i dont need to worry about. :)
 
Smith & Wesson serialization help

I need help identifying production date on a newly acquired pistol.

Smith & Wesson 10-5 serial # D807420 with 6" barrel.

Also, a pre model 10, serial # C428328 with 4" barrel.

Your Model 10-5 .38 Military & Police tapered barrel was manufactured in 1975 or 1976. Serial range for that period was D750001 to D870000.

Your .38 Military & Police Postwar was manufactured in the period 1957 to 1959. Serial range for that period was C402924 to C429740.
As it has no model number it should be a 1957 gun, even though it is high in that serial range as model numbers were introduced in 1957. Otherwise it was a mistake that the model number was not stamped, which was not known. In which case I'd say 1959.

Can someone help me date my newest S&W Model 66 no-dash? Serial number is 6K82065. It also has police department markings on the left side stamped into the metal. It says MPD and below that it is 6625 T. Any info on that would be appreciated as well. Thanks in advance!
 
hey all, just got a nice blue 29-8 mountain gun ,ser.DAJ52xx, has the lock sys. on it but no key ,should i worry about this? any info is app. thanks H2O

Your club has inherited a Model 36 Chiefs Special manufactured in 1975 or 1976. Serial range for those years was J250001 to J370000, so 1973 seems likely.

Your .38 Military & Police (Post War) was manufactured in the period 1948 to 1951. Serial range for those years was C1 to C223998, I'm going to guesstimate early 1950.

Olympus:
Your Model 66 was manufactured in 1975. Unfortunatrly it doesn't list an MPD marked gun in the various special runs for police departments. A S&W factory letter would probably sort that out for you, but it costs $50. You'll have to decide whether satisfying your curiosity is worth that much.

The Model 29-8 .44 Magnum Mountain gun was a stocking dealer special in 2003. Most guns shipped that year had a serial number starting with C, so your gun may be a more recent run - the Standard Catalog of S&W was published in 2006 and does not list the most recent serial ranges or special runs.
As your gun is quite recent a call to S&W will clarify that for you, it should be on their computers rather than in old paper records. They should also be able to supply you with a key for the internal lock.

1968 or 1969. Serial range for those years was S305000 to S329999, so 1969 seems likely.

Early to mid 1985. AHsxxxx to AHTxxxx serialed guns were shipped in July 1985.

1947 for your K22 Masterpiece. It should have Made in the USA stamped on the frame instead of the four line address. The postwar K22 began production in 1946, so that is an early gun. Nice find.
 
Yup, it says Made in USA only. its about 85-90% with a wide spur hammer and later 1970s grips.. Found in in a pawn shop south of here and figured 500 OTD was pretty reasonable :)
