Pistol Info Appreciated

a) caliber: .357 mag
b) bbl length (from cylinder to muzzle): 4"
c) grips shape (round or square): Square
d) number of shots/cylinder bores: 6
e) type of sights.: Adjustable rear, Cast front
f) serial number, and if there is a letter in front of or anywhere near the s/n on the bottom of the grip: ACT43**
g) Model number if it is under the crane.: 586
That number, if it is the s/n, should come from the butt of the grip (or under the barrel or face of the cylinder).

Any info Would be awesome as I just got this gun.
It is finished in Nickel
The nickel is slightly yellowed (probably from hoppes)
Thanks, TED

Your Model 586 Distinguished Combat Magnum was manufactured in 1983. It is a first year production gun.
There is a recall out on this model, with some magnum ammo the primer can flow back into the firing pin bushing, locking up the cylinder. Under the terms of the recall S&W will pay shipping both ways and install a new firing pin and bushing. If your gun has been modified there will be an M stamped after or near the model number in the cylinder yoke cut out.
Thats the bad news.
The good news is a call to S&W will be all thats required, they will send you a shipping label.
If you are only going to shoot .38 specials then there is probably no need to have it modified.
The 586 is a fairly indestructable gun and should outlast you.

Radagast, would you date this latest acquisition for me? Thanks, again for your knowledge and assistance.

Good day! I've got a Model 15 Combat Masterpiece I'd like to nail down for sure. I was told it was made in 1969, but I'd like a second opinion to be certain. Pic below:

UpTheIrons:
Your Model 15-3 Combat Masterpiece was manufactured in 1969. Serial range for that year was K848782 to K946391.

mrjefe2u:
There is no such animal as a Model 1940-2. The C prefix was used for the Model 10, 11, 12, 45 & Aircrewman models.
The 11 is out as it is a .38 S&W, the Model 45 is out as it is a .22lr, The Model 12 is out as it began production at C223999 and the Aircrewman is out as it is a variant of the Model 12.
So you have a .38 Military & Police Postwar manufactured in 1951, a pre-model 10. Model numbers were introduced in 1957.

SeaLevel:
Your Model 686 Distinguished Combat Magnum was manufacturd in late 1982. Gun in the AAFxxxx to ABLxxxx range shipped between October & December of that year.

Model 19-3

Hi all! Put a down payment on a Model 19-3 today. Don't have it front of me but here is what I know:

Model 19-3
Serial number: 2K46XXX
Blue
4" Barrel
It has the smaller Combat Grips

I believe it is all original. From what I can find I think it is a 1971. Can anyone confirm this?

Thanks!!

Your Model 27-2 was manufactured between 1974 & 1977, the N2xxxxx range was used during those years. The last half of the N2xxxxx range was supposed to be Model 28s and 58s, with the other N frame models swapping to the N3xxxxxx range in 75 & 76, then the N5xxxxx range for 1977/78. Yours appears to have skipped that change over.
I know serial number N2597xx shipped 23/3/76, so I'm fairly sure yours is a 1976 gun too.

Justing26:
Your Model 49 Bodyguard was manufactured between 1962 & 1969 in the serial range 295000 to 786544. If the cylinder release is flat then 1962 to 1966. If concave 1966 to 1969. The Standard Catalog of S&W doesn't have a year by year breakdown for that period. My guess is 1962 or 1963 based on an average production of around 60,000 guns.

GunTotinAmerican:
Assuming your gun has an unfluted cylinder then it is a Model 657-2 .41 Magnum Classic Hunter Stainless manufactured in 1991. Product code was 103820, this was a limited run of 2000 guns.

1) 38spl 2) 2 inch barrel pinned 3) square butt 4) 6 shot 5) adjustible sights 6) serial# 33K49XX 7) nickle finish 8) model 15-4 thank you for any info Radagast I bought this little beauty many many years ago. Nutbusted:
Your Model 15-4 Combat Masterpiece was manufactured in 1978 or 1979. The serial range for those years was 25K0001 to 56K9999, so 1978 seems likely.

Dear Radagast, thank you for the info everytime I bring that little "pimp" gun to the range everybody wants to shoot it. Again thank you!! Nutbustd US Army Retired
