Fallout mike:
1971 or 1972, with 1972 most likely. A round butt Model 30 .32 Hand Ejector is what it should be, but there have been short barreled guns labeled as the Model 31 Regulation Police, which technically should be a square butt with a longer barrel.

manufacture date S.W. model #36-2

I bought this S.&W. 38 special, serial number BBD8152, For $300.00. I was hoping maybe someone could help me with the manufacturing date. Thanks Roger

old model 10 S&W

I have a S&W model 10 with a C 78xxx serial number. Can anyone tell me how old it is?

C-1 through C-223998 were produced between 1948 and 1951.

So I would guess yours was made in 1948 or 1949.

You would have to factory letter it with S&W to get the exact date it was shipped.

Your Model 28-2 Highway Patrolman was manufactured in 1969.

rholtman:
Your model 36-2 Chiefs Special was manufactured in late 1988. It may not have shipped until 1989.

Thanks Radagast the 4" HighwayPatroman Is a nice pistol I'm glad it was made in 1969, the gun has a wide trigger and hammer and is still in new condition. I don't now if mine has had a trigger job or not but it is super light DA & SA maybe it was just made that way, either way I Love it and THANKS again.

Hi,

Please serial date my gun. Thank you!

A .38 Cal
B 2"
C Square Butt
D 5 Shot
E Fixed Sights
F J93445
G Airweight
H Factory Engraved Receiver

jscott479:
That gun dates to 1970. If the hammer is exposed, then it is a Model 37 Chiefs Special Airweight. If partially enclosed by a 'hump' on the frame, with only the spur exposed, then it is a Model 38 Bodyguard Airweight.

What say yee of this pistol?

a) .38spl
b) 2in
c) square
d) 5
e) fixed.
f) alb1012 is on the butt..
g) Model 36 (no dash).

Also it needs a new extractor, one of the ¿notches? in chipped where it comes into contact with the hand. If the trigger is pulled quickly it wont turn the cylinder.. I also want some normal wood grips for it, and a carry holster, anyone know where i can find these things for a reasonable price? :)

Your Model 36 Chiefs Special was manufactured in 1985. Guns around that serial range shipped in November of that year.
Grips, see if your gun store has a box of grips to dig through. Once upon a time people happily traded wood for rubber, the local store may have a few relics of that period.
That gun is most likely a round butt J frame, not a square butt. The majority of 2 inch J frames were round butt. Take the grips off and check the frame.

Numrich deal in second hand parts and have the extractor star, but are out of pins. They have new square butt target grips and worn second hand round butt grips;

Brownells sell new parts:

You will need to check if the new parts fit your old gun.

There are a lot of S&W parts on Ebay:

As for a holster, that's a personal choice with a multitude of possibilities. Start a new thread about that.

Hello Radagast

Its definitely a square butt. Does that make it Rare? :)

Oh and i found a cheapo pair that well worn for 10 bucks on ebay.. bought the quick.. the wear doesnt bother me ;)

Hi guys,

This robust revolver came to me this weekend.

a) 38/357
b) 4 inches
c) Hogue after market grips, but other images look to be a square bottom grip
d0 six cylinder bores
e) Fixed sights
f) BER80XX

I believe it is a Model 65

johnmcl:
Fixed sights, .357 magnum, stainless steel, 4inch partial lug barrel would be a square butt Model 65 .357 Military & Police Stainless.

As above, but full / heavy barrel under lug would be a Model 681 Distinguished Service Magnum.

Either way, it was manufactured in late 1989 or early 1990. Guns in the BEPxxxx range shipped December 1989, guns in the BFNxxxx serial range shipped March 1990.

my 642-1

I'm curious about production date. I have a 642-1 with serial number CVE 9193 and what also looks like a hand engraving of 014. Can you help with the year this was made?
Thanks,
Steve
