According to my 3rd S&W catalogue the model 17-4 was a revision that started in 1977 and ran thru to 1988 when the dash 5 revision was incorporated.
If your barrel is pinned then the revolver was made previous to 1982.

Chamber SN matches the frame, and colt bullets fit. Everything I’ve found points toward a Model 1917...except the long colt part.

According to the S&W Catalog 4th edition, there were some 1917's produced in 45 Colt and are very rare. I would suggest going the the Blue Forum and posting some pictures and all of the info you have. There are experts there that can nail it down in a minute. www.smith-wessonforum.com . If you are not a member, I would sign up and then post the info. You will be amazed at the information you will receive in just a short time. I'd be scared to say for sure, but you may have a rare and valuable gun on your hands. Or you could just send the gun to me for safekeeping and once I get all the information you want and shoot about 500 rounds through it, I'll probably send it back unless it tells me it likes the new home better than the old one!

Thanks for the info, Eddie! As for the offer to ward the firearm in question, I’ll have to get back to you.
Info has been posted to the forum you suggested...and now we wait.

Still hoping to date my .32 as posted on 7/20.
I may have run that one here a while back ; I promise to record and save the data better this time.

I just found your post on the other forum. Not the answer I was hoping for, but I knew those guys would pin it down quick. The good news is it doesn't really matter that its a really rare and valuable gun (although that would make it somewhat better) but you got a great family piece that you can enjoy and pass on down the chain.

This is true. I’m happy to have something with family history, and it is a cool piece. Thanks for the referral to that forum. Those guys know their stuff! I learned a lot about the piece, and sent Dad a link so he can also learn a bit!

s2702xx Late1966-early 67
n3681xx 1976
n7083xx 1980
n7484xx 1980
82k51xx 1980
These are shipping dates. Probably very close to manufacturing date, but with S&W you can only get information when guns were shipped.

Would an extra digit on the SN help with pinning down the year for the S-series Model 57?
