I'm trying to find a manufacture date on an old S&W Chiefs Special I just picked up on Gunbroker bearing a serial number of 716517. It's a .38spl with 2" barrel & round butt. Fella who was selling it says he carried it on duty in the early 1970s.

In 1969, the serial number began being stamped with a "J" before the numbers; does yours have that?

Not much more to tell, its a Late-80s Model 36 which has had the hammer spur ground down. Nice condition, though.

Can't appraise, just hundreds, not thousands... if the butt had not been mutilated.

OK, normal square butt, that's good.
Lots finish wear but it is probably a great shooter.

That isn't a "K" on the barrel markings; think of both of them more like brackets or parentheses.

The rear side plate screw is out of sight under the Magna grip.
