Gun trumps knife in robbery attempt
By News Sentinel staff
February 21, 2003

An alleged Thursday night robbery attempt was foiled by superior weaponry when a knife-wielding intruder was stopped by two gunshots.

A clerk's husband at the Merita Bread Bakery Outlet on Greenway Drive shot the unidentified intruder twice, apparently in the arm and leg, according to Knoxville Police Lt. David Rousch.

James Petty, 64, was helping his wife, Wanda clean up and close the store when a man entered about 5:30 p.m. and demanded money, Rousch said.

As the suspect attacked James Petty, he drew a firearm and fired in self-defense, Rousch said.

Officers said Petty has a permit to carry the weapon.

The suspect's injuries were not believed to be life-threatening, and he was transported to the University of Tennessee Medical Center.

Charges are pending.

I doubt he had time to say it, but this woulda been a good time for the old line "typical [appropriate epithet here] ... bringing a knife to a gunfight" :p

Why would this be a factor in his own place of buisness?

It shouldn't be but this is an article in a newspaper, not the Shotgun News.

So, the first question the reporter asks is, "Did the shop owner have a permit for the gun?" Obviously every person should be required to have a permit to even touch such a dangerous item.

Hopefully, a responding officer would lay out the facts for the reporter, and maybe the officer did, so that the reporter would be better prepared for future instances of this type.

Interesting point StandingWolf. I sometimes wish these guys get away and like the family cat, crawl into a dark space and simply "die." Instead they go to the ER at taxpayers' expense and get free medical.

Don't forget the free food and free room for a next few years

He'll be back on the streets before we know it, and wise enough to pack more than a knife. :fire:

Free E.R., free room/board, Public Defender, more free room/board...then some lawyer will jump at the chance to drag the shooter into court...for free. ALL good reasons for practice on the COM shots under stress. :D
Mark.
