Give the guy a break. It's a good idea for some. I've had a few years experience with 1911's, was assembling a new XSE without my glasses, and ....ooops. It still happens.

It seems to be a close relative of the playing card method recommended by several members. If it is made of sufficiently thin and tear/cut-resistant material and not too expensive it would be worthwhile.

kudos to the administrators for letting you post it. A newbie might contemplate the mistake before they make it whether they buy the product or not.

Sounds like a good idea, and like somebody said it may just make somebody think before they strip their first 1911 and end up with a big scratch on their new pride and joy that they probably saved for a long time to get.

Sounds like a design flaw to me. You should be able to re-assemble a gun without damaging it.
I know, it's blasphemy.

It won't happen with my next one, but experience is a stern teacher.

Buddy of mine had a truck with a clutch/ignition lockout...meaning you have to depress the clutch to start the vehicle. He borrowed my old Land Cruiser which did not have such a device. He hopped in an hit the key with first gear engaged. It lurched forward, over the wheel stop and died.

Nothing was harmed but his pride. He got it started and as he backed over the wheel-stop he did he thought to himself "when you make something idiot-proof you make a better idiot".

Truer words were never spoken...or in this case thought.

Well, it's half an Idiot Scratch Prevention Tool. Doesn't seem like it would help with the idiot mark on the slide. Yep, have one. Been shooting 1911s for years and, in one careless moment . . .

I would think a common playing card would work just as well.

Even playing cards are still paper, so they can be cut or torn. Hopefully the device is made of a tougher material, e.g., some sort of plastic.

meh, too late for me too. I was cleaning my stainless PT1911 post-shoot a few weeks ago. It was about 90+F and 100% humidity and I was sweating like a fire hose. Casual momentary lack of concentration and sweaty hands = one nice scraaatch

To be honest, it really doesn't bother me much. I bought the gun to shoot, not display, so it's going to get honestly earned wear and tear marks eventually.

Plastic-coated playing cards are common. The one I use works perfectly for the purpose under discussion.

IMHO, a 1911 without an idiot scratch is not a 1911...

I do think that its a good idea to have one for the nicer 1911's that dont want to scratch.

This thread has taught me a valuable lesson:

I will make sure any 1911 I purchase will already have an idiot scratch so that
(a) I don't have to worry about putting one there myself; and
(b) I can blame the scratch on the previous [strike]idiot[/strike] owner.
