Well I shot my second IDPA classifier today!

I dropped about 20 seconds from my previous try, but still in the MM category.

I have made some great improvements, but seem to have a nagging brain fart when the timer beeps! :banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead:

Much improved in stages 1 and 2, need more patience with the longer shots of stage 3. I went from a 190 score in the first classifier, down to 170!

Overall it was an improvement, with much more to work on in the future. I can easily see where I can drop a lot more!

be safe, and keep shooting! :)

BEEP
Did that help?
But seriously, do you have a timer that beeps that you can dry fire practice with?

yes i just got a timer on my iPhone to beep and beep again in 1.5 seconds to train getting the gun out and fire the first shot on target. ;)

I have the benefit of having one of the best shooters as my Safety Officer when shooting. He gives me new stuff to work on after each match. Not alot of different things in one, but just one thing. it is a good way to learn!

be safe.

Having a speedy draw is nice, but in matches and the classifier, it's really not that important (most of the time) compared to things like accuracy and efficiency and effective reloads.

Certainly continue working on your draw-to-first shot as part of your practice, but understand that's not where the low hanging fruit is. Even if you managed to improve your draw consistently by a half a second, that's only worth about 6-7 seconds over the whole classifier, and it's easily erased if your PDs go up because you were rushing beyond your control.

Speaking of control, if your time added from PDs is more than 10% of your raw, you're out of control. Do whatever you need to get to always be in control - slow down, get on the front sight, even out your tempo, etc. This is especially important on stage 3. Treat stage 3 like a bullseye match if you have to.

Sorry. PD = Points Down...as in "Penalty" Points Down.

Within the silhouette, there's an 8" circle that's marked by perforations. Hits in there (and in the head area) incur no PDs, so it's known as the "down zero" because you get zero PDs.

If you don't get your minimum required hits in the -0, you get points. Each points is a half second penalty added to your raw time. Just outside the -0 is 1 point, and further away is 3 points. These zones are all marked by perforations. A complete miss is 5 points.

So...assume you're supposed to put a minimum of 2 rounds on each of 3 targets...

Target 1 = clean, a pair of down zeros. No points added.
Target 2 = a down zero and a down 1. 1 point added.
Target 3 = a down zero, a down 1 and a down 3. You felt your 2nd shot was bad. It was the -3. Since you were allowed, took a make-up shot that hit the -0. They take the best 2, so you only go 1 point down.

Total points down = 2 = 1 second added to your raw time.

You might be wondering how hard could it be to hit 8" at 10 - 15 yards. Well, given all the time in the world, it ain't (or shouldn't be). But when the beep sounds, and the timer's running, and you're shooting at your limit, it's suddenly a different story. :uhoh:

Oh yeah my PD is still up on the 3rd stage, but nowhere near like it was 6 months ago! It is better, and it will get even more better (?) :scrutiny:

practice practice practice!

be safe!

On the classifier, shoot fast and ate chances.

You will bring more wood home from matches.

Practice the classifier until you become a MA and you will leave empty handed more often than not.

I started out as a SS from my first classifier shooting the game and "round robbined" the 4 (then 5) divisions one class at a time at matches bumping in division.

Back then, with a bump at nationals, they sent you a new card with your bump in that division and all other divisions were good for that year. Once you make 5 gun master you don't have to shoot the classifier.

May not be the way for everyone but kept it interesting for me and seemed a better route than the guys that classified their way to EX and placed in the MM times at sanctioned matches.
