IF you buy from Amazon and IF you want to support the NRA

I think it's been mentioned here before. However, I just noticed it again the other day.

If you go to the NRA page and then follow their link to Amazon the NRA gets a cut of your purchase. Wish I had known/remembered before, I have spent a LOT of money with Amazon and would have like the NRA to get a small cut of it.

Just thought others might want to know.

Please don't hijack this into a thread on how Amazon is jamming your tin-foil hat or how the NRA is doing whatever conspiracy theory this week.

It's just a heads up for those who deal with Amazon and would like for a cut to go to the NRA.

I buy stuff there sometimes - are the steps visit NRA page, follow link to Amazon and that's it? Just did it (didn't buy anything) but it looks easy.

Cookies is the correct answer. When you start at an NRA web page and then go to amazon.com the amazon server sees where you came from because of cookies. The link from the NRA to amazon is recorded by amazon and credited to the NRA.
It is simple, painless and safe. There are all kinds of security issues at hand, but the bottom line is that amazon knows you came in from the NRA.

Regardless of what you think about the NRA, this is a good thing. Certainly better than amazon seeing that you came in from dirtygirls.com.

Or what ever.

When you start at an NRA web page and then go to amazon.com the amazon server sees where you came from NOT because of cookies, but because the link to Amazon is http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/redirect-home/nraorg-20. The link from the NRA to amazon is NOT recorded by amazon and credited to the NRA, but Amazon, through a number appended to every URL on the site as you browse, remembers that you came from the NRA. IF you then make a purchase, it remembers who referred you in.

Well actually isn't it the cookies and URL...

I could be wrong, as the tech is always changing, but I think it's really both. The URL (the Address containg the reference to NRA cited above) tells the Amazon server that you came from the particular site "referring" link, and a cookie for your session (which is not necessarily written to your system) includes that referrer to insure proper compensation, as you move from page to page. And it is important to GO to the NRA page EVERY time you start a session at one of these places. You might save your cart and return, but the referral fee won't necessarily survive from one session to the next. While some sites use local client cookies, most folks won't know when it is a session cookie or a written cookie, so always start at the site you want credited with the purchase value.

I wished I'd known that sooner. I was buying the daughter's Similac formula, Burts Bee's diaper ointment, and several books, CDs and DVDs from there over the last year. I bet I'd bought over $1000 worth of stuff from there, recently.
