Assume you have machinists tools, ability, and materials available to build your own gun from scratch. You can’t run afoul of NFA law. What gun do you decide to build, just for the fun of building it yourself. Anything legal to purchase. Keep in mind, your building it so any ***minor*** changes you want to make can be done at your discretion.

Do you pick historic, interesting, rare, weird, or just something that you enjoy and would like to build.

I have a few I would love to build. Just curious to what guns everyone else would want to be their built-not-bought baby.

Mine, there are a few.
P08 Luger (not remotely realistic)
Aluminum frame tc contender rimfire only.
Drilling 12x.410 over 30-30 (again not realistic)
Twist barrel cap lock dueling pistol set
Colt single shot derringer set
Cap lock traders pistol
Garand
Remington revolver
And of course a 1911 (just not gonna do it)

Only one I built from nothing but a Lothar Walther chambered blank was a 50 BMG. I have a lot of “stuff” but still buy when available and the price is right. 50 BMG stuff isn’t because of small demand.

I did, until I moved to a cheaper place without a garage. Grumbling over that.
If I had the space and time, it'd be a PPSH for me. Always wanted one for some reason.
Would probably do it in 9mm instead of 7.62x25, nowadays. Or make it convertible.

If I could, I would build a case hardened Desert Eagle. With a custom fourty five / fifty A.E. cartridge.

Maybe something strange like an all tungsten carbide ninteen eleven, or Ruger mkiii.

Or a Coonan in three twenty seven magnum, out of titanium.

I have always wanted a bronze cannon. Not huge. But very ornate.

If I could make any myself, I would be making ALL of them, rifles, pistols, shotguns and cannons myself.

Sharps-Borchardt in .45-70, H&H style Sidelock .577, Ballard .32-40 Schutzen rifle, Martini Henri in .22 Hornet, M1903A4 with a 14x Unertl, Colt New Service, Colt Officer's Model Match .22LR, Colt M1908 in .45 ACP. The Trap gun I drew up in high school (similar to the Ljutic Space Gun), and a PTRD-type rifle in .50 BMG.

Don't have EDM capabilities, and too old to get one.Could fudge a rifeling machine easy enough.Think we have everything else.....Funny thing is,I'd build a stainless SPS M700 clone in 7-08.Funny'er ,they're easier to just buy one,I did.

For handguns,it would be an improved Python.Always wanted one with the roller bearing "innards".Too lazy to build, would rather be shooting, haha.

50 BMG would be cool.

Maybe something even bigger! Say 16” battle ship big. I have no idea what I’d do with it but it would be BiG and cool.

Btw before they renovated the DC Navy yard I got to see the building where they made the 16” turrets. Even run down and closed for decades the place was cool. I guess it why I still love the BIG GUNS

I'd build 2
a totally customized 1911
and a true to bore size framed 28 gauge O/U with double triggers, round body, 30" fixed choke barrels - all weighing right at 6# with a piece of killer wood

A 1911. Since it is not totally outside the realm of possibility, I may build myself one to fit my wants/needs of the model.

My next build project is going to be a new hand formed Khyber pass style monel frame for that .22 revolver that I pictured on here in the Rough Rider vs SS thread that had blown apart while shooting it. Way not worth it but I already have the monel block so I am gonna just do it.

I have worked with extruded monel. It can be a pain. Which grade do you have?

A Damascus barreled and actioned, straight pull twenty two rimfire. Bird's eye maple stock with Holly and Ebony inlay in the adjustable stock. Also set with the Diamonds from my ex's ring no jewler seems to want to buy, may just as well get some use out of them. Maybe in the silver butt plate with my signet letter.

I am thinking more French Baroque, less Mexican drug dealer!:)

I did a series of "sculptures" in the art program of the University of Alabama while getting my Masters. My theme was Psychological Warfare.
I built a roughly 3/4 scale caricature of a Soviet 122mm gun that was towable and could shoot a thin stream of water, a 2-1/2 foot long bright orange 1911, my impression of an Oerlikon AA gun that just made a loud clacking noise, a menacing robotic-looking "sentry post", and a number of other odd things out of junkyard scrap and found objects.
Given a chance, I would probably make some other stuff like that - just for fun.

  • P08 Parabellum pistol in 9mm
  • Steel frame and slide version of the RG25 pistol (the zamak wonder I have has been just unbelievably satisfying to shoot)
  • An AR-15 with upper and lower made out of steel.
  • An updated version of the short-lived MA-10 bullpup semiautomatic rifle.

Newton 1st edition rifle in either 256 Newton or 6.5-06.
Savage 99 in 300 WSM
O/U 20 gauge with an extra set of O/U barrels in 6.5x55 patterned off of a Beretta 687 style receiver. Top grade walnut with family crest engraved on the side plates.
