Lets say for instance you were a self made entrepreneur worth over 100 billion (Bill Gates type) and you wanted to make a difference for the RKBA...

What would you do and how would you go about it?

I'd buy my own secluded island, and sell lots for those interested in building homes next to my 2 billion dollar gun range. Why should I pay for promoting a cause for a foolish populace that doesn't want it bad enough to work for it? People don't appreciate things when it's given to them....

...on the other hand it would be fun to buy the New York Times and Time Warner....then go with a pro-gun format.

    100 billion?

You could start your own pro gun rights organization.

Ditto. You'd probably make even more money -- especially if you told the truth.

I was thinking that one could buy up all the good advertising slots and
show well produced pro gun ads.

Hire a good marketing firm to make shooting the new national pastime.

Build nice ranges where there are none.

Set up a good grades, good behavior for a gun and lessons program.

Produce a high budget pro-gun movie with well known actors.

Yup. Buy some media outlets and begin a CAREFULLY PLANNED education campaign. First earn a reputation for honesty in reporting. Tell the bad and the good on everybody, yes, even the Republicrats.

Start using the 'entertainment' side of the house to educate people on the history and foundations of this country. Educate them on what statism has done to people.

Educate, educate, educate. Don't propagandize. Be merciless with sloppy research no matter WHO does it, friend or foe. Teach the sheeple how they've been lied to.

Form a tax exempt foundation and Create PSAs that educate on a wide variety of subjects. Junk science, consumer issues. Make them VALUABLE to Joe Average. Get into the schools in a big way with education campaigns. Summer camps. Support youth sports, and toss in some education with it.

    Educate, educate, educate.

That's all done under the corporate umbrella. As an individual, buy airtime and promote good candidates.

Depends on how much i had, but chances are i would buy off enough politicians to repeal every major gun control law, and amend the constitution so that it clearly defines the 2nd amendment. If, after this, i had any money left? Suppressed SMGs and lots of ammo

How much would it cost to buy enough duct tape to complete wrap up Micheal Moore?

    Buy myself a senator...

Donate a large sum of money to the GOA and the NRA (250mil each) and tell them both that "You have your money. Go and make damned sure that the truth is told about guns." or something like that.

I would then start a chain of ranges accross the US.

I would buy a whole crapload of guns.

If I was Bill Gates (assuming I still had my soul and hadnt sold it to Satan...), I would reverse the policies of MSNBC and make it a truthful reporting station. Anything against the civil liberties of the US or against the CONUS, would not recieve airtime. The GOA would be given discount rates for pro-gun advertisements. Stuff would change.

I'm thinking of a national chain of indoor ranges.... that would be fun :)

To be perfectly honest, with 100 Billion dollars, i'd probably say 'screw the NRA' and just start buying off politicos to get my way.
Yeah, it's against my principles, but i think with that kind of capital i would probably stop caring.

Since we're talking billions, one thing I always thought would be great would be to subsidize a large portion of the purchase of used target rifles and pistols for youngsters for competition and hunting (sort of a private CMP). The one thing we cannot do without is a population of young people who aren't indoctrinated against guns.

I would also spend a lot of money on PR for IPSC, IDPA , Cowboy Action shooting, hi-power and other shooting sports to raise the profile of the shooting sports in the American consciousness. This would include merchandizing (Cabelas would be selling Cowboy Action shooting logo shirts and IDPA hats, for example).

Since action shooting can be made very TV friendly, I would create regional teams to foster regional loyalties to among sports fans (this would be some sort of new sport or division of existing sports) and increase visibility through "team branding". There are several cable channels now that would probably air such events if the financial model were attractive to them.

I would also try to create an endowment to fund advertising highlighting people whose lives were saved by ownership of firearms.

Although the political stuff is worthwhile, I'd prefer to concentrate on laying the societal foundation for a better political climate in the long run.

GSB hit the nail on the head. I'd spend it on ranges, education, and furthering the shooting sports. My goal would be to get as many kids involved in shooting sports as possible, so that once they are VOTING ADULTS they'd be a ballot-army for RKBA.

In addition, I'd offer donations to worthy RKBA organizations for immediate legal fights.

    1. Buy Bushmaster and the Saiga factory in Russia (see Step 7).
    2. Buy the NYT (it should be selling for cheap about now...) and a few major TV stations, fire everyone there and hire honest people.
    3. Run Eddy Eagle every Saturday morning, along with short ~1min blurbs during other kiddie shows repeating the Eddy Eagle rules and such.
    4. Hire Jim March to be my lobbyist to Congress.
    5. Clone Jim March about 500 times, then sit back and wonder what every Representative and Senator will do with a Jim March clone sitting in his office 24x7.
    6. Watch laws be striken from the books.
    7. (Showing my geeky tendancy to read Slashdot.org) PROFIT!

I'd look into doing a number of media acquisitions mentioned here, but I'd have Clear Channel Communications at the top of my 'to buy' list. They own a large number of radio stations nationwide.

Said radio stations would have their slant altered, even though this might sometimes sound a bit odd. A pro-gun, pro-ccw inner city radio station in NYC would raise more than a few eyebrows, for instance.

Another company I'd look into buying would be United Defense.

Somehow, I don't think the FTC would complain about a media mogul buying a tank builder.

    cheers,
    ErikM

Finance my own campaign to run for president, give generously to the media so i can become its darling; after I win:
    1. disband the BATFE
    2. issue an executive order suspending ALL federal firearms laws- yes, ALL of them- pending constitutional review.
    3. pardon everyone guilty only of technical crimes (only violent crimes get punished)

    Heck, why go halfway?!?!

Buy politicians and judges, buy media outlets, buy Smith and Wesson and burn The Agreement, buy the NRA, maybe found a competitor to the NEA, buy lawyers to defend people in gun-related lawsuits ...

Buy a network and make it pro-gun. Fire all the antis on the news stations or cower them into conformity. :D

I'd pool my money with the state of Vermont and buy out a coastal county here in California, which will fall under Vermont's jurisdiction. And it'll help balance the budget.

I'd also open up a chain Chinese restaurant/coffee shop/shooting range.
