OK, we've gone way off the beaten path and straight into a revolution, here, with all these prohibitions...

I think he was just making a point. The OP had no focus whatsoever. Just a vague question without any sort of clarification in the first 24 posts. The OP might live in an anti-2A state, but he might also live in an entirely different country where all sorts of rifles except single shots are banned. We know nothing about the situation or what alternatives are allowed.

Since there's really not any place in America where a person can own a Tavor or AK, but not an AR, there's no reason to assume only ARs are out of the picture.

Or the OP could just not like ARs. We've never seen that before?
    If I couldn't have one I'd have a 7615.

No AR? I used to own a HK91, I'd get a HK93 or clone, a SCAR, Masada, or ARX. The most unique option would be an AR180, tho. Valmet used to make a 5.56 variant and I've shot it, pretty good enough.

Of course if it can't be a self loading AR plenty of pump conversions are on the market and in CA I understand it sidesteps the other collective features ban. You can have regular mag buttons, etc on it. I'd get a side charger AR upper with no gas.

If it's not self loading, it's legally not an AR. It's some other gun under the laws of states with AWB - but it's still an AR to us.

Something else, with the vagueness of the question I can only really give a vague response.

Shoot. I only bought an AR because I thought it might be banned outright someday soon.

Therefore, I'd shoot the rest of my collection like others here have posted.

If I felt compelled to have something in .223/5.56 (besides an EBR) I would consider a Mini 14 and a bolt gun of some sort.

I'd go with a Ruger gunsite scout or a Mossberg MVP, they won't ban a high capacity bolt action.

If you remove the evil features from an AR-15, the flash hider, the bayonet lug, the pistol grip....its no different from any other semi-auto rifle out there.

So which AR's will they come for first?

The fully licensed select fire variety? Or only the SBR variety?

Can we infer the people who don't personally prefer AR's, but like other styles won't help fight this ban on shooting (owning?)?

Meh, nasty world scenario. Team up and fight! Don't elect the WRONG people pursuing some dream world.

Be more specific. Any comprehensive ban on AR's would undoubtedly ban most of the alternatives as well, including the mini-14. And given that AR's are legal across much of Europe, never mind the fact that they are the most popular centerfire rifle in the United States, I think a ban would be a lot harder to implement, both politically and practically, than the prohibitionists imagine.

However, if you just mean "what if the AR didn't exist, what would you shoot", I have always wanted a Steyr AUG, so for me it'd be an AUG A3 in that scenario. Heck, I'd trade in my RRA AR on an A3 tomorrow if it were practical to do so.

Given that ARs are the most popular rifle design in the US, if banned it seems the obvious question is not what would I be shooting, but who would I be shooting it at?

Let's ignore such unfortunate scenarios. If the AR just didn't exist? For the AR15, I probably wouldn't bother replacing it, or I might buy a custom 1:7 twist .223 bolt gun. There's not much the AR15 does that I care about, other than being sort of recreational fun and cheap to shoot. Of course, if it weren't for the AR15 .223 would not be cheap to shoot. It's a good gun for newbies, women and children I guess. The varmints that the .223 is appropriate for, I don't hunt. As an anti-personnel cartridge it's a poor choice. Overall, I don't much care. Most of the .223 auto alternatives are inaccurate junk.

The AR10 is a bigger problem, since it's the most effective accurized battle rifle anyone has yet come up with. The closest alternative is probably an accurized M1A in a Sage chasis, whereby you'd end up with a gun that cost twice as much to be not nearly as nice. But as far as I know all the alternatives are even worse, since pretty much everyone desiring to make that style gun has settled on some variant of the AR10 as the best platform.

If this is just a what if the AR didnt exist question I'd likely to with something like the B&T APC 556, possibly an AUG. Other viable options might be the sig 5xx guns, sig MCX scar, tavor, HK 53 and clones and of course an AKM and that is just in 556. Going beyond 556 opens the door to the classic battle rifles such as the FAL and HK91 (and clones). At least for general use. For more of a percision role I'd I likely fall back on a bolt gun. Also PCCs have been experiencing somewhat of renissance and I might shoot one of those more often depending on the task at hand is.

Most of us that live in the land of the not so free have our specialized AR's. Some with a welded bolt through the mag well. Some with a closed off welded gas system. Others with that freakish stock that does away with the pistol grip.

For me, I spent a bunch making my Mini 6.8 a special one and the purchase of some bolt guns to round out the collection. A Remington 700 Milspec, a Model 7 AAC Blackout, a Ruger Gunsight Scout composite stock, a Savage LRP in 6.8 Creedmoor, and lastly a Savage 110FP in 223. A siaga 7.62 x 39 rounds things out.

If you were prohibited from shooting an AR
    What would would you shoot/own?

Likely any of the guns I was enjoying shooting before there was an AR. That includes a pretty wide selection to choose from.

    If it weren't for AR's I'd shoot my ...

    Bushmaster ARC
    Bushmaster M17S
    CZ Bren 805
    HK-93
    SiG-551, 552, 553, 556
    Steyr AUG
    Daewoo AR110C
    Valmet M76
    Zastava PAP M85

    ... more often!

Some of these I actually like better than my AR's

Anything other than an M-1 Carbine. :neener:

Seriously, there's nothing magical about an AR. I was fine without one until a few months ago. Still managed to have fun shooting. An SKS and a few lever actions in assorted calibers would fit the bill.

I took for parameters the ones established by the state that I live in: New York. A semi-auto rifle with a detachable magazine cannot have any "military features," which are pistol grip, flash hider, bayonet lug, or collapsible stock. That leaves the following:

    • Mini-14
    • Saiga
    • SKS
    • Garand
The first two are acceptable because they have no "features," and the second two because they have no detachable magazine.

I don't have an AR, so that would be all of the stuff I normally shoot.

IIRC, there are lever action 30-30s and pump action Remington .308s in the family safe
No one in the family is really into the whole AR thing.

There are lots of contingencies covered with lever actions, pump actions, and bolt actions and a family of riflemen who know how to use them.
