If you were to go to war today, which knife would you take with you?

Last time I played soldier I had to hump all my personal possessions, so while these large knifes are probably great, they would be a little more weight than I want to carry.

The Mk I is what my Dad used in WWII, probably still work for me.

Smallest knife that could open cans, beer bottles, and wine, yeah that works.

That little gray thing in the corkscrew, important at this point, an eyeglass screwdriver.

The Mukti weighs 5.5lbs, hardly anything really

I’ve been in war zones but never as a true combat troop. I was a support guy.

But I understand that wars aren’t fought with knives and if you are in a war zone and have to rely on a knife to defend your life you are having a really bad day.

Im sure there are some very high speed guys who’d say they carried a knife as a last resort, but most knives are carried as a utility tool. A good solid folder and a quality multi tool are way more commonly used than fixed blades. Benchmade and Spyderco were common when I was deployed. I personally brought a couple knives with me, a Buck and a CRKT, and a Gerber multi tool.

Well I made 'em so I'd carry one:

That and a multi-tool or SAK.
One like the two upper ones is in it's sheath with the handle just to right side of my face and hidden by the file cabinet next to my recling chair in my 50x10x10 Ocean container man cave ! Ready for going to a war inside there :)

When deployed, I carry a Spyderco Manix 2 XL in my pocket, a modified Combat Shark from Don on my BA, and a neck knife.

Don doesn't make knives any more, so a MK1 from Sam O would be a good bet, too.

If I was deploying with a less conventional group with a different support structure, my load out might be different.

You'll probably think I'm crazy as a outhouse rat, but Milwaukee makes a strong, tang thru handle fixed blade, with a serrated edge on one side, and straight edge on the other, for drywall. Light and strong, everything you need, nothing you don't. That, and the Leatherman Surge.

@Boattale

How do you lose a Randall? I'm sure it's an interesting story that we need to read.
Quite a boring story actually
I was a medic, and caught some shrapnel nothing serious but needed a helicopter ride to the Field hospital to get it removed.
Chopper medic gave me a shot of morphine that knocked me out.
Woke up in recovery minus the Randal (gift from dad) I figure some remf orderly grabbed it.
I put up a sign,
$100 reward for info on the puke that took it, $1000 reward for just his ears.
People kinda left me alone after that.

When I went to war, I carried a KaBar. Were I to go to war again, I would not. I’d probably carry the Gerber LMF II Infantry or something similar (like the strong arm). I needed a knife that was less of a combat knife and more as a general utility tool. Pair that with the Gerber multi tool uncle same issues and I was gtg.

Buddy of mine carried the SOG SealTeam (big brother to the seal pup) and while it seemed like a good knife for stabbing it didn’t seem great for utility use.

Yep. The museum at Stone Mountain, GA has several examples of very large bowies, with the notation that these big knives, usually gifts given to Confederate Soldiers as they left, littered the trails the Soldiers walked . The knives I mention taking on deployment weigh much less than 2 lbs together.

Don't sell a good story like that short. Glad you made it back.

o_O

You must be on the humongus side of the curve if a nearly 6lb knife is "hardly anything". A good broad sword is generally only half of that. Us mere humans would wilt with your baby. ;)

Yup, 7'4 350lbs!

No...not really and the hardly anything joke was sarcasm.

Although it is the best throwing knife ever, if you can get it to the target it really doesn't matter what end hits you, it's gonna hurt

I carried a Gerber Multi-Tool and a Buck 110. If I was going tomorrow, I'd probably replace the Buck with a Spyderco or Benchmade folder of some sort.

I'm surprised no one said the Glock Knife (or did someone). I have one I got for being a SO at a GSSF match. I keep by my bedside next to a - wait for it - Glock.

Not war but EDC is a Delica. Multitool in the glove compartment.

If I really had to choose I'd probably do a bk9.

I've never went to war but I carry tool bags all the time. Heavy sucks but not as much as not having the right tool. It's easier to make a big knife do small knife things then vice versa
