Hey all,
Hope everyone's feeling good , especially my fellow Illinois folks.

This wasn't on my radar until this morning - https://www.commercial-news.com/new... replaced,be printed without expiration dates.

This isn't the clearest info but I was hoping someone in the know could shed some light. It appears that FOID and/or carry permits in the state will not expire anymore? I'm hoping this is true, it's certainly a burden to keep track of expiration date on both and the difference between when my carry permit expires VS when FOID card expires- as I understand if you've got a FOID card that expires but your carry permit is not it automatically makes the carry permit invalid.

The issue a lot of people run into is long waits for renewal, some over 12 months in some cases which leaves people unable to purchase guns, ammo, primers and in most cases powder even though technically their FOID is valid if the paperwork has been submitted.

It's been my experience that the state makes this process as difficult as possible to deter ownership. I know a couple years back the state police (or someone) was sued due to the cost of a FOID application that forced them to reduce the cost to $1 or some insignificant cost.

My question is this: if anyone knows, will this new law remove the requirement for current FOID cards to expire regardless of printed expiration date? In other words, will cards continue to expire on the date printed if they were current and up to date when the removal of expiration dates took place?

Illinois gun laws are clear as mud to me, I can't read legal-ese and make sense of it- to the point of I have never even been able to understand cook county's magazine capacity laws (I live in Mchenry co but work in Cook co and just carry 10 rd mags when in Cook co to avoid trouble)

Any one who knows please fill me in.
Thanks!

I'm not an Illinois resident, but from reading the FAQs on the Illinois State Police site (https://www.ispfsb.com/Public/Faq.aspx), you can call (217) 782-7980 and ask them your question.

I don't know this for a fact, but from my readings the FOID card will still have a 10 year renewal requirement, but that cards will be issued without expiration dates and renewals will be automatically issued to the cardholders. Perhaps a cost and/or time saving measure is to not issue a new physical license at each renewal?

Obturation - as an "inmate" of IL-ANNOY, I just got my FOID renewed and it does NOT have an expiration date on it. There have been conflicting opinions as to whether or not it will be automatically renewed at the 10 year mark.
One of the problems these new cards are already presenting is that some mail order business are "reluctant" to spend the time and money on calling the ISP (state police) to verify that these new cards are current and active. This will increase their cost of doing business unnecessarily, making them not want to do business with residents. People in the Chicago area already have this problem.
Go to https://illinoiscarry.com/forum/ and read up on what we face now. :barf:

I hope for automatic renewal, the whole process is goofy and I think is intended to deter gun ownership by making it a hassle . most folks don't know the laws, can't keep it straight- I've been asked for FOID card to buy projectiles more than once and I just wonder if the cashier even knows what it is I'm buying. I do most of my shooting and component purchases in Wisconsin where things are normal.

First off, my sympathies to all my other ILLinois bretheren. I was not aware of these changes. My CCL expires before my FOID, so then what?

IIRC, the new cards are being combined into one. There will be either a line of text or a special mark on the new FOIDs that indicate if the person also has a CCL. If you don't have a CCL, that area remains blank. As for the timing, I don't know.
When does your CCL expire? Did you have to set up an on-line account with the ISP to apply for your CCL? If so, there might be a way for you to find out. Some talk at Illinois Carry has indicated that the new FOIDs will get a change to their on-line account about 6 months before expiration. The "Renew" button will become active and allow you to file for a new FOID. They may do something similar for the CCL renewals but you will still have to upload new documentation for the 8 hour (??) class you need to take to renew.

Good luck !

I'll try this again since the first try blew up and disappeared. :cuss:

Yes to the online ISP account. But I believe that's a requirement to apply/renew anyway ?

The article points out if a FOID expires during the active period of a CCL, but not the other way around.

In my particular case, the CCL expires 7 years prior to the FOID. So do I get to renew my CCL for another 5 years, then in 2 after that when the FOID expires do I get a combo card? Or will the combo card be issued when the CCL expires first?

Fvuckin Illinois...

They may have the intent to force the retailer to run your card each and every time you purchase an item to see if it is still valid.

That leaves a trail of records of everything you buy, that are not supposed to be kept, but are..........

Retailers just visually look at a foid card for powder, primers and ammo, they don't enter any info . for guns, it's the regular 4473 form everyone uses. The real question is if foid cards will continue to expire, just like everything else in IL , clear as mud

A trail of records of everything you buy that are not supposed to be kept by the ATF, but there is no prohibition from your state keeping those records unless there is an explicit state law prohibiting it.

Many states (including my Michigan) require registration of handguns, which is prohibited at the federal level but is perfectly legal at the state level.

I believe their point in removing the expiration date is to prohibit retailers from doing this. They will now be forced to run your card for each purchase. This will also give way to charging you the transfer fee for each purchase thereby causing the price to increase and serving as a deterrent for many gun owners.
