Illinois GOP picks Keyes!!

Has Keyes accepted?

I expect him to say no.

Why? Because there is a good chance he will lose.

I love Keyes and long to hear him on the national stage. His take-no-prisoners hard-core conservatism, combined with his excellent speaking abilities, is music to my ears.

But no way is IL going to vote for personal responsibility over 'free' government money. The sheep in the inner cities are too accustomed to blaming others for their problems and living off government (I blame government largely for that, by the way, not those folks).

I am a bit concerned with how it would look for him to run in Illinois after blasting Hillary for the same thing.

Nevertheless, I think Keyes would be great in the senate. Imagine the debates on the senate floor, with Keyes locking horns with the likes of Clinton, Kennedy and Feinstein. I'd be watching C-SPAN a lot more often with him in office!

I really like Keyes as far as polititions go. I have heard him in debates and he is one heck of a speaker, but what I really like is his commitment to his beliefs. I cant say I agree with his positions on all subjects but have all respect for someone who doesn't change his mind every time he reads the polls. One thing I don't know is his stand on gun control and 2nd Amendment issues. Jim.

It was mentioned on WLS talk radio that Keyes could also keep Obama from stumping for Kerrey even if he ends up losing anyway. I thought that was a good idea.

I dont like the idea of carpet bagging either but maybe if Keyes says yes and loses, he could put that to rest by sticking around and helping the illinois republican party rebuild.

At any rate the debates would be something to watch from my perch in Northwest Indiana.

I would pay to see Keyes on the Senate floor filibustering! That would be great! After 3 days, he'd probably not even break a sweat and probably would not have uttered the same thought twice! :p

Thoughts on Alan Keyes, more or less at random:

1. I love Alan Keyes as a candidate. I will donate money and time IF he chooses to run-- a step a lot of people seem to be omitting. He has NOT chosen to accept the nomination yet.

2. Nobody knows whether Illinois will vote for a conservative, because it hasn't been tried in so long. At least, not in a statewide office. Truth is, this race is a bit of a throwaway because no one is supposed to be able to beat Obama. If Keyes can step in and even make a showing against Obama, it could change Illinois politics for the better. Even liberals should be happy that a race between these two can actually be run based on differences on issues rather than pure personality.

3. Honestly, I don't think Keyes can win. Obama has all media on his side at this point, and I mean nationwide. He also has a ton a money and a commanding lead, and no matter who the Illinois GOP brings in from Maryland, a lot of people will vote against the IL GOP on principle.
But I WANT Keyes to win, and if he gets into this race I'll jump in and do what I can for him. And I don't believe any of the other names mentioned would give Obama a run for his money.

4. Ditka. . . . the only things we ever knew about Ditka were that he was apparently against smoking bans, for abortion bans, and gave some money to Republicans. He might have had a better chance than Keyes . . . . . maybe. . . . . but he'd have been a much worse Senator, and at some point the Illinois GOP is going to have to drop the games and start nominating people who would be good at the office. Honestly, that was Obama's strength all along. I disagreed with the man on every single issue, but I could imagine him being a relatively good Senator.

5. What if Keyes stayed in Illinois and took over as GOP Chair after Judy Baar-Topinka steps down? Talk about a new direction!

6. No, I don't think the above will come to pass. The cynic in me says the conservatives talked the RINOs into this by arguing that no one would beat Obama, thus the RINOs could afford to let the Conservatives send one of their guys in 'cause the RINOs don't believe it's going to matter.

Take over as chair? wow that is a thought! Seems to me there are plenty of reasons to encourage Keyes to run despite the carpet bagger issue that we are uncomfortable with.

I’m not sure what to think about Keyes running. I think it’s sad that Illinois doesn’t have a single ‘home grown’ candidate worth running. I also could have sworn that you had to be a resident for seven years before becoming eligible to run for office, but I guess I’m wrong. If he decides to run he’ll get my vote despite the fact I don’t think he stands a snowballs chance in Hades.

The only bright side is if he accepts maybe he can turn around the disastrous state of the Illinois GOP. They really need to get it together. This next election will pave the way for 06. A lot of state reps (dems) are now under fire for taking so long to pass a budget, and that they left out medical malpractice reform. In 06 the GOP should be able to reclaim the governor’s office, if they find someone worth running. As horrible as Blogo is he still has a lot of support.

But hey, we did manage to get the shooting complex in Sparta in the budget, so things are looking up a bit.

Six 4 Sure

I agree on the point of turning around our pitiful GOP!

It may take an outsider to run as a true conservative to prove that they can at least make a decent showing agains a hand down media chosen darling like Obama.

Keyes will have my vote. All he really needs to do is make a decent showing (for only being in the race for 90 days with no real national backing) to wake up the GOP that running a conservative instead of one of our own home grown RINO's might be a better way to win here.

I hope Keyes wins. If not, I'd like to see him in the VP slot in 08.

DonP I guess you’re right, if it takes an outsider to wake up the Illinois GOP I’m behind it. I hope he does well (if he accepts). I felt this senate seat was a golden opportunity for the Illinois GOP to make a comeback. There are a lot of people upset with the dems in this state (dems and repubs both) and I thought this might be a chance to soundly elect a republican to the seat.

Regardless of the outcome, one thing is for certain, the Illinois GOP has got to get its house in order. Maybe this is the wakeup call they need.

I have been wondering if the Ill GOP was going to actually nominate someone or just roll over and play dead.
It would take someone with a lot of name recognition to stand a chance.
I believe that Alan Keyes has as good a chance as anyone the GOP could have picked.
In any event, having somebody on the ballot improves the odds a lot over having nobody on the ballot.

Anybody been reading the general massa-cree in the press? It's truly vicious.

The press in Illinois is shocked, SHOCKED, I tell you!

Either that or they're terrified of Keyes.

Oh, and Denny Hastert is doing his usual "craven coward" act on Keyes--he's worried that Keyes will alienate Democrats!
What kind of bootlicking sissy do you have to be when the best comment you can make on your own Republican Senate candidate is that he may not win many people from the OTHER party?
Gee, Denny, I bet he won't win many Greens, either. And I heard PETA and ANSWER and the NAACP and the Brady Campaign all hate him, which I guess makes him a bad candidate for Republicans . . . . . but just for kicks, why don't you explain exactly HOW one more time?
:banghead:

Read elsewhere that Keyes will accept. Well, I was flat wrong!

Still don't get it though. I figure he has a 40% chance to win at best. Why IL?

Warner in VA is probably going to retire. I'd give my left #$% if Keyes would move to VA and run for Warner's seat!!!! And he'd win, sure as hell.
