Illinois has too many guns! Blame Indiana's loose gun laws!

This is how many guns were sold in each state in March ... <snip> ...

:what:WHOA!

If they maintained that pace for an entire year over 16.8 million firearms would be added to the personal collections of Illinois residents.

O'course from reading past news stories out of Chicago, the legal citizens might still find themselves outgunned. :)

..I figure places like that, i.e., N & S Dakota, Wyoming, Nebraska, Maine, etc., they already got their guns.
Let's just say you're not alone in that thinking.

And as someone else noted, there are LOTS of gun sales that can legally happen without a background check, or anything at all to do with NICS. AR is one of the states in which I can sell a gun to a friend without any kind of gov't involvement. (And yes, I'm always amused that my state got "AR" for an abbreviation.)

There were almost 7 times the number of guns sold in Illinois than in Indiana. What about that story line of everyone going from Illinois to Indiana to buy their guns?

As my grandpa used to say, "One should never let the truth get in the way of a good story".

You can't push an anti 2A agenda or that strict gun laws work using real data, Chicago is a prime example of this, so, they have to deflect the blame on something/someplace else to stay on agenda, that is how it has been for a lot of years and for a lot of topics and for a very long time.

This is why people should do their own research.
DON'T trust my research, don't trust the media, do your own research
.

Quick Stats I have found from 2016 CDC and US Department of Justice Data:

~ 35k annual gun deaths in 2016
65% Suicide
15% law enforcement in the line of duty
17% criminal activity (gangs, drugs, initiations, etc)
3% accidental discharge

So 35k is actually more like ~6k actual "gun violence" (~17% of 35K)
(note 40,000+ died from a drug overdose that year, and 36k died from car accidents)

6k (17% of 6k):
701 Los Angeles (11.7%)
480 in Chicago (8%)
344 in Batimore (6%)
333 in Detroit (6%)
119 in Washington DC (2%)

About 1/3 = 33% of all gun violence happens in 5 major cities (not states) all of these cities are in states with very strict gun laws

This basically leaves 4000 for the entire rest of the nation, ~80 deaths per state on average.
NOTE: That is an average because some States have much higher rates than others. For example, California, a strict gun law state, had 1,169 deaths and Alabama had 1.

Back to the OP and to keep this on a 2A note

You can't legally purchase a gun in Indiana if you are from Illinois unless it goes through an FFL, from what I can find, and, apparently, based on the OPs numbers, you can legally purchase a gun in Illinois if you are not a criminal and can pass a background check since the numbers of sales are from "legal sources" (Illinois resident over 21, Valid FOID Card, Valid state ID or Drivers license, and 3 day waiting period)

More fun facts: This is actually a pretty good report if you want to read it - https://www.bjs.gov/content/pub/pdf/suficspi16.pdf
Only 1.3% (based on surveys of prison inmates by the DOJ ) of prisoners obtained a gun from a retail source, 0.8% from a gun show, and over 90% got it from a illegal source (off the streets, straw purchase, etc).

So, maybe legal gun sales are so high in Illinois (again note 98.7% of these are legal sales by people who can legally buy a firearm, not the criminals committing homicides) is because they are using their 2A right to keep and bear arms to defend themselves from those that don't follow the rules?

I tried to stay on topic and within the THR rules here,

For all the years I lived in Illinois, the old "guns from Indiana" trope was attributed to straw purchases by girl friends or new gang recruits without criminal backgrounds who lived in Gary area providing guns to gang members in Chicago. Even if it was true (entirely possible for at least some percentage), it doesn't make much difference what new rules were put in place given a straw purchase is already illegal, as is transferring a gun to a criminal from another state. I cannot think of any reasonable rule which could be enacted that would suddenly convince criminals to see the light and discontinue committing crime. I'm not nihilist and throwing my hands in the air to say nothing works so let criminals do as they please. Certainly there must be something which might work like maybe keeping repeat offenders in jail and running programs like Broken Windows which was so effective for decades in New York. I think we have seen the reversal of the program and turning violent offenders loose has not been very good for regular folks, so a pretty solid case could be made these are bad ideas and reinstituting tough on crime measures might be better than mistreating law abiding citizens rights.

I'm also reminded of the similar rhetoric out of DC, that the DC "gun problem" was due to "lax" gun laws in nearby States, like in DE or MD (but it was VA & WV that were always blamed).

Similarly, NYC also always blamed "lax" nearby States, too. Which, by this point, must mean PA . . .

Funny how that is . . .
Makes you wonder how on earth those pore folks living in those nearby states were surviving, what with all those crime guns and all. Right.....

Ummmm.... Not so much, it seems.
Thanks @P5 Guy For the link.

Oh, and I did just have to leave Fla on the list. ;)

Excellent post! Facts speak much louder than the words coming from deflecting, deceiving, lying Anti Second Amendment politicians... especially those from Chicago, NYC, SF, LA, Houston, Baltimore, Portland, Seattle, Denver... you get the commonality!

I do not find that surprising. They are legal gun sales in a state (primarily Chicago region) where gang bangers kill each other and non-gang folks at a rate that exceeds anyplace in the US. They use illegally acquired guns that have been brought in from other states by the hundreds if not thousands. The city has ordered it police to break off engagement with gangs if they are outnumbered. I think the legal gun sales are because good citizens are filly waking up to the fact that they are responsible for their own self defense because the police might not come.
