If you're looking at any .30 caliber rifle, a Mosin Nagant is obviously one choice. It's inexpensive and fun. Something more refined, and with ore options, would be a nice Savage or Remington bolt action rifle in .308 or 30-06. Those cost more than the Mosin but are a bit easier to modify as there's more out there for them, have removable box magazines in many cases, etc.

I have 3 Mosins a M38,M44 and a M91/30. I used the M38 for my project. I used a bent bolt body and a ATI scope mount kit from Buymilsurp.com. A striker spring from Wolff springs. A Huber trigger from Numrich. And a stock from Advanced Technology. If you want a commerical rifle I would go with a savage.;)

If you are looking for a .30 cal bolt I would find a good American made .30-06 from Remington, Winchester, or Savage. They can be found used anywhere across the USA from $200 or $300.

    7.62x??

7.62 covers a lot of things. If you mean the most commonly used here in the US with that designation, 7.62x51 or .308 Winchester, then you have lots of options depending on the use.

In the low cost range the Remington 700 line is always good. Savage is nice, CZ. You have a LOT of options in .308.
