You guys are probably close, but here's a more likely situation from a former loss prevention guy at ups:

small boxes come in....nightcrew monkeys shake boxes looking for jewelry....see on label metal something or orther.....bust package open....no gold? chuck box back in zipper small sort bag opened....bag gets dumped later on...parts fall on belt and are dumped or get piledup in overgoods where junk gets sold by the pallet if not claimed...

if you really want to have something stolen there drop it off Friday before closing & declare it as a high value or pharmacuticals. When guns are stolen the ATF gets involved and they do investigate cause many of the workers are below21 or are felons. they use metal detectors before you can leave the site so most metal objects stolen have a driver involved in the theft.

Hello Wildalaska.
Sorry to hear about the theft. I hate that the shippers,U.P.S. and the rest of em does not want to police their employees about stealing. Instead thay make us pay for over night freight.

How ever now looking in hindsight, Would it not been better to bring the gun to a dealer in N.J. and have him put it in his books and ship to a dealer near you in AK. and go to that dealer to pick it up???????????

Yeah, I know it cost a few bucks to pay the dealer to do the transfer. But you could have the gun insured for full value and probably not have messed up dads vacation.

Sure sounds cheaper then replacing a barrel though !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Some High Standards {depending on the model} are worth quite a few bucks.

Got to be careful if you go cheap.
Just my opinion! Good luck. I hope it works out for you.

This thread suggests the question as to whether it would be cost effective for the shipping companies to raise their wages, training and supervision to the point that the loss of a job for malfeasance would actually pose both a real risk, and a real loss to the employee.

You'd have to figure it would dramatically cut the insurance claims, and it probably wouldn't hurt their image with their customers either.

there still is the problem of the fedex employees going through packages and stealing. the only difference is that the gun dealer in NJ would probably charge the sender a fee.

its gonna happen anywhere. my brother is a driver for fedex ground, and there is no real recourse if a driver were to intercept packages and steal. theres like a $500 fine, but thats only if the sender/recipient report the package as missing.

I called thew shipper in NJ, Kinkos in Paramus

I grew up right next to Paramus. I'm shocked, shocked I tell you that you encountered a rude jackass in Paramus, NJ. Well, no, come to think of it, I'm not.

uPDATE...HAD the secutiry guys come buy on Friday...they took the box and a cc of paperwork, took photos of the gun and are trying to trace the tape that the box was repackaged with..

Other than that I will say nothing more until I talk to them again on Monday..

I made dad happy though...took him to the range gave him my M1 carbine and 100 roundsa and let him go to town. He can still hit the bullseye..

As he said...the last ime I shot an M1 carbine was when I shot a guy with one in 1967 when I was on patrol in Newark during the riots...

What the heck would someone want with just the barrel? Why not take the whole gun?
An anti trying to "make the world safer" by disabling one gun and "taking it off the street" without actually taking (illegal) possession of the firearm?

My brother worked at the Terre Haute airport(Hulman Field?) a few years back. He also said that a fair part of every night's festivities was seeing just what they could break. The rest was spent betting on what part would fall off what decrepit cargo plane...

This sounds like a good cause for the Brady bunch. Let them know that guns are flooding the streets from employee theft from freight services.

You would have to assume that the organization was filled with rational human beings. More likely they would fight to ban shipping of firearms altogether.:barf:
