How often do you purchase a gun, if ever, solely driven by impulse? It’s not something on your wish list, fits a specific need, or one you searched for, for years. Just simply purchased based on the mere premise of, “that’s kind of neat, price seems good, think I’ll buy it”.
Seems like every fourth of fifth gun I buy, falls in to this category. I have no regrets, and welcome them to the collection. More often than not, they often turn out to be a “I’m glad I bought it”.
Just wondering if anyone else is similar in purchases.

Not as much these days as I have to be more deliberate with money than I used to. When I was in college working an internship that paid pretty well, had no expenses (thanks mom & dad), and was unmarried that happened pretty regularly. Offhand thinking back I bought a Buckmark, HiPoint Carbine, WASR AK, and S&W 629 on impulse.

Happened to me a couple of times over the years. I spot a really nice piece at a "too good to be true" price and I grab it quick before it gets away. Last time must have been about 8 years ago, though.

I'll admit to never regretting it...

Three times this year so far. Glenfield 75 in May, Taurus 94 about two week ago, and a Marlin 99M-1 the day after the Taurus (had seen it in the store, and it started gnawing on me.)

Generally, about once or twice a year.

Rarely these days. Kids, wife, bills force me to think harder. That being said, I have a mental list of guns that can be purchased if found for a decent price.

Haven't done it much lately but a few years back I occasionally found some pretty nice deals in the Used Gun display case at some of the local gun stores. Last one was a LNIB Lightweight Baby Browning. Kind of always wanted one but never did anything about getting one til I found this gem.

Impulse buy

Yeah, been there and done that. Out and about with my wife down in Columbus, Ohio. Stopped at Cabela's and looked in the gun library. Saw a S&W Model 17 that was real clean so on impulse I grabbed that gun. I enjoy shooting it too! :)

All the damn time.

Pretty much every gun I buy is an impulse buy. Im not into pistols or ARs so I don't go for the latest and greatest black ops tacticool stuff. I am usually looking for revolvers and bolt action or lever action rifles. I look for good deals and grab them when I find one.

I was very close today on a Smith&Wesson 41 mag.

My last impulse gun buy was a Rossi (Ranch Hand) Mare's Leg in .357Magnum. It was in stock and I got it. Still waiting to buy a holster for it but all is well since I wanted one since I was 10 years old in the 1950's. I have one and it is wonderful to have lusted for it!!!

That caliber has tempted me my entire shooting life. Friend of mine had several in his shop for awhile, really clean older S&W revolvers, the stuff I zero in on. Kept thinking I have no 41 magnum brass or bullets or for that matter even dies. Do I really want to add another handgun caliber? Thank God, eventually they were sold. Really came close on one of those fine revolvers. :)

I think every gun I've ever bough has been pretty thoroughly researched prior to purchase. I'm often guilty of impulse purchasing other things, but not guns.

Years ago when Ruger first came out with the 77/22 I went to a gun show to buy one. The dealer had a new Kimber Model 82 on the table right next to a new 77/22. I brought home the Kimber.

I don't know about buying a gun that isn't on the want list (that seems counter-intuitive, but maybe my want list is simply bigger than most folks'), but I frequently add stuff to the list after hearing about it, and doing a bunch of research that gets me more interested. That's what happened with me and the Manurhin MR73 recently; I heard about these months back, saw one for sale online, did some more research out of curiosity, learned they are basically the best 357 revolver design ever built (and similar to a S&W in operation, which I like, to boot), and decided to put up my money.

I suppose there's that occasional low-ball auction bid I somewhat unexpectedly come out on top of, but I'm usually careful to not truly bid on impulse. My 150$ Ithaca M37 was that way, but I had been idly looking for an Ithaca already at that point, so I'm not sure if it qualifies as a true impulse buy.

Usually the impulse for me is "alright, it's time to stop pining and just buy the damn thing" when a half-way decent deal comes up :D

This one is the perfect gun too. It is in good enough condition to be an excellent example and a candidate for a safe queen but not to the point that you would be afraid to shoot it every now and then and hurt its value. A solid 98% mid eighties revolver.

He had an $1199 price tag on it, but its a pawn shop. The guy gets a lot of good guns and will move on prices. I may go back next week.

I haven't done that yet. I don't have enough money, or enough guns already possessed, or a short enough wish list, to get something purely on impulse.

Maybe in a decade.

Last two were completely on impulse and not on my immediate need or want list, but considering I'm just starting out and they do fill a spot in the need section it's not too bad

I guess you can say i'm doing it now,i'm starting my personal pistols collection.I just bought two the last to months and going to pick up a Glock42 next month. Then I plan to buy a 1911,a S&W M&P 9mm,& a Colt revolver but haven't made up my mind about the Caliber yet.Oh i'm retired now and the wife is getting ready to retire in a couple of years.I guess you can say it's my new hobby these days.I do CC & OC.

Only once. A stainless steel Ruger New Vaquero with a birdshead grip in .45 acp. First it took my eye, and then my money. Now it comes along on every range visit.

Impulse buy for a gun?

Never had that happen. Every gun I've ever bought came with a bit of thinking, research, and (most importantly) savings. I HAVE found some guns which I've fallen in love with, but that happened in my younger days when disposable cash wasn't something that I had a lot of. So the ones I fell in love with were simply added to my list o' guns I'd sure love to have some day.

THEN I'd buy them when I had the cash!

:)

If memory serves me correctly, I have done this exactly twice.

The first, I was looking for ammo a while back, found myself at Dick's Sporting Goods. Night before a camping/shooting trip I ended up buying a Stoeger Uplander 12 gauge.

The second, I was very early for a CHL renewal class, which took place in a gun range/store. I was killing time looking in the cases, and my eyes fell upon a Ruger LCR .22. I had only recently admitted to myself that not only did I lack some skill with a DA revolver, but my incompetence was amplified from a snub.

Could easily be talked out of the shotgun. The revolver, I think I'll keep it.

Not really. I'm more prone to inexpensive impulse buys, so its usually knives or tools or survival gear or non weapons military surplus. I never have the cash on hand to impulse buy a gun, but I have impulse lay-away'ed a gun :D

Reloadron

I have that same feeling about .41 Magnums as well. Many years ago I had both a 4" Model 57 and a Model 58. Traded one of them and sold the other when I needed some quick cash. Still have some of the ammo left over along with quite a bit of brass and bullets. Nowadays either Smith is pretty much out of my price range but I could see some nice used Ruger Blackhawk in .41 Mag making for a great impulse buy.

Once or twice. The most recent was this summer. I walked into the CMP North Store and they got in a boat load of 1903A3's. I purchased two Remingtons that were correct and had low barrel readings. Paid them off quick. I wish I had purchased a SC too. I learned from missing out on the 40x's and Winchesters a few years ago. I still kick myself because I was there for an unrelated purchase.

Mine has been ammo recently. I impulse buy if it is surplus that happens to turn up. I purchased 1400 rounds of M855 that was in SAW magazines right before the panic because it was cheap at the time, numerous rounds of M2-AP because it was also cheap and available at the time and most recently a can of 1952 SL Ball still sealed in a 520 round spam can.
