Imr 4831 vs. H4831 for 300 win. mag.

Hello, I was planning on using H4831 for 300 win mag, but my friend gave me a new unopened pound of IMR4831 to try. What is the difference, if any, between these two powders?

I just thought id post this to see if anyone uses IMR vs. Hodgdon 4831 for reloading. I'm trying to work up an accurate load using 190 grain SMK's

The IMR4831 is just enough faster than the H4831 to result in the neccessity of using different data.

As for which is best, only YOUR rifle can tell you that.

Use appropriate data and work up. See what the accuracy difference is, and use the more accurate (often the Imr4831).

Personnally, I usually prefer RL-22 to those two.........Except with the latest aquisition.... a Ruger M77mkII in .257Roberts. It has a strong preference for the H4831...........

GooseGestapo gives good advice. I've loaded for a 300WM for over 30 years. My personal favorite was IMR4831 with 180, 190, and 200 gr bullets, with the 200 being the most accurate.

If I were to start over today, in addition to IMR, I would look at Rl22, H4831SC, Retumbo, IMR7828, and the new Hybrid 100V.

Hmmm, I've been reading a lot about the Reloader 22 for the 300 win. mag. I think im gonna just load some IMR 4831 and grab some RL22 and see what they both do. Seems the RL is very popular for this caliber.

Does anyone have any pet loads for the 300 win mag with RL22 or IMR4831 using 190 SMK's

They are both so close that I can't detect a differance in use. Think
they even have a short cut powder with the same burning rate, but
short sized grains to meter better out of measures.

I keep coming back to IMR 4831 for .300 Mag.
You give up a little speed, but pick up accuracy as you drop the charge weight
down a few grains from the Max. load for whichever bullet.
