Voted other because I have an XD45 and I like it very much. I am sure the others are just fine too. I am not crazy about the grip angle of the Glock though and is the reason I chose the XD.

You'd also want an extractor for 100% reliability. The ejector is the same. I don't know of 10mm conversion barrels for the M&P. Extractors and mags may be an issue. If they did, I'd carry my M&P 45C in 10mm and be done with it.

Glocks are ok but for me,I sold them and went to mostly Rugers.Rugers in their semi-auto pistols and revolvers.

None of the above.

I'm a bit partial to either an XD or XDM. I shoot them much better then either the glock or M&P.

My choice would be a Springfield XDM

I own 3 XDM's and they are absolutely great guns, accurate, reliable, great point and shoot ergonomics, superb capacity.

1911 or 3rd gen S&W

You can't go wrong with a good 1911, I won't go into the brand wars, decide for yourself. Figure out which features are important to you and get a gun with them on it. It doesn't really pay to customize a basic gun these days with so many production gun with all the bells and whistles already on them. My other choice is the Smith and Wesson 3rd generation guns. I had a 4516-1 and sold it. I could kick myself. If you are gonna carry a Glock, and it is a good choice, I would stick with the 23 in 40 S&W. Lots of firepower in a small package.

I own a Colt 1991 and I'm very happy with it. Changed out the trigger, thumb safety to ambi and a houge wrap around grip and it is a very servicable for CC. I actually had the Wife on the back of my Motorcycle for most of a morning and she didn't realise I was carrying. Other than the limit is 9 rounds I see no problem with it.
I also have an reccomend a H&K (Yes they hate me too) USPC and it is a great little .45 with lots of potential for those times when you need a smaller carry gun. IWB in shorts at 3 or 9 and it rides all day without issue.
My best reccomendation would be to rent one of each you like a develope a preference based upon your personal preferences.
