Personally, I think these two firearms are roughly equal in quality and reliability. The CZ has a frame-mounted safety while the Beretta has a slide-mounted safety, so your personal druthers may enter into that part of the decision depending upon what you prefer.

What made the difference for me is that I believe that the .40 caliber cartridge unnecessarily batters guns originally designed for the 9mm AND 9mm ammo is cheap and good personal defense 9mm ammo is available virtually everywhere.

Based on the guns you identified, I'd go with the Beretta.

If it was the CZ-75 instead of the CZ-40, I'd say flip a coin, but personally I would recommend the Beretta over the CZ-40.

Again I am a little shocked over the support for the '92 over the CZ40

Well, it's one of those funkified CZ things, though. It's a CZ, yeah, but it's not what most CZ people go Ga-Ga over when they think of CZs. Like the man said, if it was a CZ-75 in 9mm, it would probably be a closer race.

(But I'd still vote Beretta, cuz I already have a CZ-75. )

Now, would it have been a new CZ75 in .40, I might have thought twice about my answer ;)

You will not regret the 92, I promise.

Of the two, I've shot the 92FS, and it is a good gun that you have to train with to be able to shoot it well.

My preference would be for one of the NIB CZ 75BDs that I've seen in my area for around $349.00, since I have a strong preference for a gun with a decocking lever, as opposed to a manual safety.
Beretta de-cocks when you put it in safety.

What I meant is that (given a choice) I prefer a gun with a springloaded decocker lever, like the Beretta "G" model, that can be fired in D/A mode once it is decocked, rather than the "FS" with a slide-mounted decocker / safety, whereas you first have to sweep-off the safety on to fire it D/A. Just my preference.

Buy the Beretta. Shoot the Beretta. If you regret it, sell the Beretta for a profit and buy the CZ with the proceeds. Compared to retail new pricing, $375 is a steal. The CZ is full retail.

You can't do that one in reverse.

3 Gun, have you considered practicing or lessons?
