I'm looking to replenish a stash of "Indian head linen". I bought some back in the 70s, at least that's what I asked for, and it worked perfectly in the TC Seneca I was playing with back then.
I recently dug out what was left for a buddy who needed something thinner than pillow ticking.
So, in looking to replace my stash, I don't find anything by searching "Indian head linen".
Maybe I'm looking in the wrong places?
Anyway, yes, I'm aware that it's cotton and not linen and what I have measures .012" and is a very tight weave (and white). Can I go into a fabric store and ask for what to get something similar?

I would visit the fabric store, micrometer in hand and see if I could find something.
Take a piece of what you have left to show.
Don't scare the clerk by saying what it is for.

I once told them I planning on using it for patching in a muzzle loading rifle and they looked at me shocked and confused. This was when buying pillow ticking at Jo Ann’s.

I use pillow ticking I get at Walmart. Take a pair of calipers with you and measure it. If you wash it it will lose a little thickness from the sizing they use.

You want to buy material without sizing. At least 30, 40 years ago you could. All of us around here who shot MLers would cut a small piece and light it on fire. If it shriveled up, it meant there was sizing in it, or as I was told. That's what the sizing was, plastic. Anyways, it was claimed it would melt in your barrel leaving a coating over some of the burnt BP. I don't know for sure how true that is, but whenever I bought pillow ticking or duck I would ask for it without sizing. I don't THINK washing it would remove the sizing - not sure.

Get "pocket drill".....its tough cotton fabric used for...,well, making pockets i guess! Regardless, it is popular material for patches. I use it. I use pillow ticking also.

Do not get this confused with "pocker krill", a small species of saltwater shrimp.

Once ordered a hundred dollars worth on accident off a site from China. The smell wad horrendous when it arrived.

I wanted some thinner than .018 pillow ticking so I went to WM with my calipers and told the girl was looking for linen and she showed me several bolts of cloth all marked "Linen" on the end of the center piece. I found some that measured .012 and bought a yard of that. None in white, it was brown which should make finding shot patches fun but I believe its going to work better in a couple of my BP guns. I'm not really worried about burn through since I nearly always use a firewall patch unless its a 25gr load in my Kentucky pistol.

Got some at Joanns fabric. I think it was bleached muslin - on an isle between muslin, burlap and pillow ticking. I showed them the note I had about "pocket drill" and they said that's what I needed. 100% cotton, very tight weave, white, and measures .010. Ran it through washer/dryer and it measures .012 - perfect for what I was looking for.
Thanks again guys!

Showing my ignorance here, folks.

How do you use calipers on something soft like cloth?

I thought “sizing” is starch, which can be washed out. Was I wrong?

Put your fabric in the caliper jaws and close them up. I measure it with the fabric compressed. Starch is used to stiffen fabric. Sizing gives it extra body(thickness). If you measure ticking in the store and come out with around .015, after it's washed you get closer to .010.
