im looking for an inexpensive, roughly $300 9mm pistol that isnt a hi point.. one option is the star model B but is there anything else in this category to consider? and how reliable are these star pistols?
EAA Witness Fullsize Polymer and SAR B6P can both be had for the $280 price range.

The Taurus PT111 G2 is $210.

There is the Walther PPX.

Try going through Armslist, sometimes you can get a decent 9mm used.

negative on the TP9, im not giving any money to the turks
Contrary to popular belief, the TP9 pistols are already in this country so the Turks have already gotten their money.

I have several Turkish pistols and they are of good quality. People need to STOP thinking that Turkish companies like Tisas, Canik, Sarsilmaz, etc., are money gathering organizations for ISIS.

Do people realize that Germany during Desert Storm was selling the technology to make nuclear weapons to Middle East countries, guess you won't be buying a German gun either.

S&W 5906 or one of its brothers.

They're seldom under $300 anymore. Police trade-ins dried up, and people started figuring out how good they are. A 5906 you can snag for $300 today will most likely look like it was drug behind a truck down a gravel road.

I got my new S&W Shield for $300. The Caniks are supposed to be pretty good and are priced $320-350 for new ones. I would not get a Star when there are more modern designs out there in the $300 range in which parts, holsters, magazines, and aftermarket accessories are more plentiful than for a Star.

Ha-ha! The TP9 is worth three TP9s!

OP, get a well-used trade-in FN Hi Power MK III and be happy ;)

Plus, how much armament in the middle east was provided by the US?

I still want to get my hands on a Canik as it seems like the most appealing budget priced 9mm pistol on the market right now

People also seem to ignore that Turkey has had at least 2 major attacks this year, one killing 10 (approx Jan 12) and another killing 28 (approx Feb 18). They are victims of terror as well.

So many good ones on here, my list of favs (depending on sale prices, etc):
-Walther PPX
-Ruger 9E
-SAR B6 series (including K2)
-Tristar (Canik) L-120
-Canik TP9 series
-Arcus 94 series
-Taurus 92
-Taurus PT111111111111111111
-Stoeger Cougar (if you're lucky)
-Smith and Wesson SD9VE
-EAA Witness
-SCCY CPX2
-Diamondback DB9FS (actually better than reviews say)
-Taurus 809
-Kahr CT9

MY FAVORITES ARE THE WALTHER PPX, RUGER 9E, SAR B6P. I OWN ALL 3

Not really relevant now that you've mentioned you want older pistols, but I'll still vote for the SCCY 9mms. My brother got one recently for a carry gun. I've shot it and while it is a little small for me, it is a good gun, especially considering the price. Shoots great and he hasn't had any problems with it.

Something to consider if ever thinking about newer guns in the price range.

i do already have a hi power on my list, im still leaning towards the zastava m88 first though.. besides costs is there any reason not to just save up and buy a new hi power?

I kind of tend to go "value" on guns, and all of the following were less than $400, and the Taurus PT111 G2 was $225 including the transfer fee.

Taurus Pt111 G2- A great little carry gun. Mine hung on the third shot and has been flawless for about 500 rounds after that. Eats everything and is actually pleasant to shoot for such a little gun.
Astra A75-Kind of the opposite of the Taurus, all steel and very heavy for it's size. This is my house gun. Never a flaw in the 7 years I've had it. I think it was $260 in new condition. I bought some expensive parts for it, and never used them.
S&W 5906- It's a police trade in, barely shot, and barely carried. Was $359 + ship + Transfer.
Canik TP9V2, $375, including transfer. Flawless so far, with a great trigger.
Sarsilmaz/EAA k2 45, a big 14+1 45ACP, all steel. Perfect, so far.
Tanfoglio "Mossad" 9mm, both in full size and compact, same as original "Witness", both are satin nickel, and shoot great. I bought the compact first and liked it so much I got an even prettier full sized one. Both were under $400, including shipping and transfer.
A Pietta SAA "clone". Mine is from Century, 22LR 10 shot. They sell the same gun under a lot of different names for all different prices, some over $400. I havent shot it yet, but I don't expect any. Action is very nice for a stock gun that was less than $325 including the transfer. All steel too, with a nice Walnut grip.

Some gone away great cheap guns:

Astra A80(two of them) and an A100. All were flawless and I only sold the A100 because I needed cash, and I got an insanely high price on GB for it. A price that made me laugh, because it was just ridiculous.
Astra A75 in .40, even being all steel, it wasn't fun to shoot. Sold it and bought the 9mm.
Dan Wesson 15-2 .357 magnum. A great shooter, with a bad finish from holster and slight rusting on the barrel shroud. I got it for $200 at a pawn shop, sold it to a friend who just offered me $300 for it one day when we were shooting it. It's been refinished and now looks like a new SS gun. The two DW .357's I have now were under $350, including transfer. My favorite revolvers, period.
EAA Witness .45, in "wonder finish". I got it for about $380 on GB. Zero issues, I really regretted selling it.

hmm, that astra A80 is nice, looks like a sig clone.. it doesnt really have that "different" factor about it though

i believe ive settled on the zastava M88 though, its cheap, its different, and i like the tokarev, many aspects about the tokarev, the M88 is a tokarev made practical and while i wasnt looking for a carry gun, it could certainly be concealed

Ruger LC9S can be had for around that price

Smith and Wesson SD9VE is also a good firearm

Also agree with several prior posters that the Taurus PT111 G2 can't be beat for the price

The smith and Wesson is the only standard sized pistol of the three. The other two can be concealed much easier if that is something you are considering. Good luck.

CDNN has the Taurus Millenium G2 for $250 + shipping and fee's. I've had one for 2 years and its a great little pistol, recoil is not bad at all and it holds 12 rounds.

9 mm's $300 or under to look at:
-Taurus PT 111 G2 (make sure it's a "G2")
-Taurus PT809
-You'll have to shop, but may find a S&W SD9ve under 3 bills. (Try used.)
-Don't have one, but I hear the EAA SAR guns are great, as are Witnesses (if still under $300) Of the two, I'd personally opt for the Witness (Italian made) but both are nice.
-Old P-95 Ruger

9 mm's $300 or under to avoid:
-KelTec P11, Can be made a decent gun, but it will take aftermarket mods...then price goes north of 300.
-Zastava Tokarev M70a. Great gun, but wasn't designed for 9mm. Mine was a flop.
-Diamondback, but I'll be honest: that's heresay. So many bad reports, though.

Great non-9 mm alternatives at $300 or less:
-Eastern bloc surplus guns, like the Makarov and Polish P-64 (both in 9x18) Or Tokarev mentioned above, but in 7.62x25 instead of 9mm.

Best wishes.

I can also vouch for the Walther PPX, CDNN has them for $289....great gun. The trigger is fantastic, they are reliable and accurate. I could care less what it looks like, the gun performs.

Decent out of production 9mm pistols available for reasonable prices? You want FEGs, especially the P9, P9R, and HP clones. Made in Hungary, these tend to be nice steel framed guns. The most common surplus 9mm FEG is a hi-power clone, while the P9R is based on the S&W 59. I've seen both in used counters within the past year for under $300.

I shot a Kahr CW9 yesterday and was impressed with it. Much more comfortable to shoot than the SCCY IMO. I also preferred the trigger although it has a longer trigger pull.

Yes, I forgot to mention the PPX. I have one, too, and they really are nice guns. A word of caution, though - the gun has no manual safety, yet has a pretty light trigger, and some may consider that a less than safe combination if a round is kept in the chamber at all times for defense. Trigger is lighter (IMO) than an SD S&W and many other non-manual safety pistols. Great range gun, though.
