I just picked up a Colt Delta Elite 10mm today. The gun appears to be in excellent shape, however, I've read there was some problems with the slide cracking on the earlier guns. How can I tell if this gun is affected? The SSN is DS14xxx.

My Delta is languishing in Oakland right now. It has been in Tempe with Ted Yost for a visit but is now coming home.
I should have it in my hands on Monday.....doing a happy dance here!
If you decide to have any work done on it, I can't recommend Yost-Bonitz highly enough. They like to work on the 10mm there.

"...earlier guns..." If there was any cracking it was likely due to the Norma ammo. Norma was the only factory ammo available when the Delta first came out. At least up here. The Colt rep had one at a pin shoot when they first came out, long ago, and only had Norma. He provided the ammo and the pistol for a bunch of us to shoot. Not a bad pistol, but much more recoil than a .45ACP. Mind you, when you're used to your own reloads any factory ammo has more recoil. Pins? Yep, the 10mm had no trouble sending a bowling pin into orbit. Pistol need a compensator though.
The other Colt rep I ran into was at Second Chance. He had an M-16K SMG.(Picture a CAR-15 in 9mm.) Didn't phase him a bit when he came back to his table and found two guys he didn't know loading his mags without asking. Oh and the M-16K is amazing.

The Colt Delta Elite in Stainless Steel is the about the ultimate handgun built by Colt, in my opinion. It's got a Series 80 safety, stainless material, and a round that's not to be beat in many circles. If I had two, I'd install low-rise sights like Novaks, but mine is so perfect I'm afraid to mess w/it.
Keep the 10mm loads factory, Remington green box 180gr worked well for me, and install a buffer as a precaution. Enjoy, you're lucky, and many folks (like you've read) are going to be jealous that you have one.

If you want a Series 70 pistol you can trade in the Delta Elite and get a Dan Wesson Pointman that is set up to shoot the modern 10mm Automatic ammunition. You'll have to put about $50.00 worth of parts into your Colt to get it to handle "full house" 10mm Ammo without cracking the "bridge" of metal, on the frame, over the slide-stop hole. This is the Colt's main flaw. (That, along with the dual Delrin recoil spring setup and the weak mainspring the spring that powers the hammer.) The round-bottom firing-pin stop prevents the remainder of the slide's energy from being imparted to the hammer spring. You should buy, and install, a stainless steel flat-bottomed EGW firing pin spring stop-retainer.

My Delta Elite was like your when I first got it, but it's been to a couple smiths (mainly John Jardine and Terry Tussey) for some well-deserved enhancements, along with night sight inserts (Tooltech), a new fitted barrel (Bar-Sto), and new grips (AlumaGrips with Delta medallions). The photo below is what it looked like prior to getting its Bar-Sto barrel, but was otherwise complete:
