Has anyone else heard of this? More info: www.its.dot.gov If you're interested, read into this site a little. This system has the potential to be a serious violation to your privacy. I won't go into it too much yet, for fear of being labled a "tinfoil hatter" ( ), but this is truly scary stuff.

I've wondered for a while now how long it will be before cars past a certain age are banned from public streets. The DOT(IIRC) had a study out years back that called for exactly that. Kinda hard to monitor a car with a tube-type radio... :)

Its

For 8+ year I was responsible for the ITS program with the Arizona DOT until I retired. During this time we deployed the freeway management system and worked with the Cities and County to coordinate the traffic signal systems. Yes there are cameras along the freeway to moniter traffic and watch for accidents. The cameras cannot not really "track" vehicles their resolution is not that good. ITS has many different componets. Most of what you read is hype. The "star war stuff" has never been deployed. There is never enough money available.

Call your State department of transportation most of them will be happy to show the public what they are doing. Email me if a group of people would like a tour of the ADOT's Traffic Operation Center and I will try to arrange a tour.

I am not worried about current traffic cameras. I will be in the future if they get much higher resolution cameras and have computers track certain license plate numbers. It would be easy to do with current technology if the cameras where better.

I am also worried about ODBIII (On board Diagnostic version three) provisions for software that tells the government if the car's emission system may be failing, or if the car does other suspicious things.

Also from a car enthusiasts point of view ODB is junk. You can buy much better after market engine management systems. The price is coming down and quality and features are getting better all of the time. I wish car manufactures would make their own, and make them user accessible.

Technology always finds a balance. For every invasive piece of technology deployed, a dozen ways of defeating it comes out. Usually it's made illegal, but said counter-technology still exists.

Example? Radar guns used by cops.

Solution : Radar detection devices. Active ECM's. (Electronic CounterMeasures, ie jamming) Web sites that report speed traps. People flickering their lights at cars approaching speed traps.

If a car's on-board systems wanna report data to the govt, a clever geek can and will reprogram his on-board system to report what the geek wants the on-board system to report. It will become illegal to do so. People will do it anyways.

Ive always been a little worried about the relationship between state governments and auto insurance companies. The state requires a person to purchase a service provided by a private company, and then uses their own laws combined with that companies policy as a means of extortion. For example, this state has a system underwhich you can pay an extra fee for a ticket in order to get the state not to report it to your insurance. Systems like this certainly arent going to help.

In that case you really should read up on the german 'LKW Maut' truck toll system. It is implemented with a (large) number of portals with camera's. Number plate recognition is computerized, with human backup. Note that the tolls are collected per kilometer and that route tracking is apparently implemented to track foreign trucks that don't have the onboard electronic radio doodad.

If your german is up to spec, read http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/LKW-Maut_in_Deutschland for more info.

Cheers,
