"The only thing worse than judging a book by its cover is judging a man by the cover of his book. So, what are YOU reading right now?"
Interesting how reading material can prejudice or influence people. Without getting into all the long and sordid details, I was sitting in a local burger joint about a year ago reading the NRA monthly magazine - American Rifleman or something along those lines. Pretty funny as I typically don't spend that much time with that rag, but it comes in the mail every few months, so I just happened to grab it and was passing time while eating a hamburger and having a beer.
To make a really really really long story short, the guy next to get gets a little crazy and whacks me in the face with a full bottle of water. It wasn't because of the gun magazine, it was really because he was crazy. As in no-**** crazy. You know that phrase "I saw red"? Well... I saw red. I got up smacked the **** out of him. Of course he passes right out then and there. I'm like, "oh oh". The cops and the EMS get there in short order and I tell my story and the EMS guys drag this drunk crazy guy off. The cop and I get to talking and he tells me that he's gonna write the report up that I was just defending myself and the other guy was crazy. Then he tells me "Besides, I see you reading that gun magazine, I know you can't be a bad guy."
So... it's not only the company you keep (except don't sit next to crazy drunk guys at the burger joint), but what you read as well.
What a phunking joke!!!
Can't remember the exact quote, but I would have loved to seen her face when it registered what you'd said.
How about this?
Reply in an even louder voice, for all to hear, "Granny, are you off your meds again?"
Or, in a softer voice, "Madam, have you sought counseling for your condition?"

It's too bad that sometimes gun owners are ostracized.
"You're not very nice."
Sounds like she's the dangerous one.
She's just rarin' to start rounding people up, and locking them away in, what? Concentration Camps? Gulags?
These people are dangerous. And they have already taken over.
"Do you REALLY think it's appropriate to wear that here ?"
"Got something against motorcycles ?" was my reply.
I have a new bumper sticker. It says...
Don't blame me
I voted for the American.
I think you nailed it right on.By ignoring her outburst[for your reading a magazine!] you put her squarely in the nut case category to the other bus riders.
although i would like to say
'when the zombies come lady, even your sharp tongue wont be enough to save you.
Going on about Zombies on a public bus may not help our cause.
In all seriousness, the best response is to ignore her and make her look like the crazy one. Sometimes a quiet chuckle is good but continuing on with your business makes you look like law abiding citizen reading up on a hobby.
