First reports of unknown paramilitary units fighting in the Ukraine, have been identified as Russian Spetsnaz due to the type of arms they were using.

subjects in the middle and right are carrying GM-94 grenade launchers

The KPB Instrument Design Bureau GM-94 is a 43mm pump-action grenade launcher that has a capacity of 3+1 grenades and is only used by Russian special forces.

These are not civilians. Putin doesn't just get up put one shoe on and goes about his daily business. All contingencies and world responses have been anticipated prior to action being taken. If you want to see assortment of unusual weapons available just scroll to appropriate section of guns.ru.

They aren't making what they have work. They are trying not to look like russian soldiers.

And US prices for both Russian/Ukrainian 7.62x39 and 5.45x39 will remain stable?

No. I seriously doubt it. In fact I think there is a very good chance that all imports of Russian ammunition be it surplus or new will cease.

This is not the thread (or forum) for discussing geopolitics, the clash of civilizations or griping about the US healthcare system.

THR exists to facilitate the discussion of firearms and other tertiary RTKBA issues.

Everything else is off-topic. Especially Obamacare gripes.

[Guys, remember: GUNS, SHOOTING, RKBA... Not politics, history, world events, and global intrigues. Let's keep it focused. Thanks.]

What better way to hide your presence than blend in with the "enemy," as nebulous as that may be in the case of Ukraine. Russian forces could either disarm temporarily and infiltrate, or confuse the opposition, which doesn't employ uniforms.

I can just imagine a military that issues fully-automatic Hello Kitty AR-15s to its soldiers, because if you lose against that army...

"have been identified as Russian Spetsnaz"

The term is meaningless. It describes any "special purpose" troops, and is not a particular unit or specialty organization. There are probably 50 "spetznaz" organizations ranging from those of the GRU (intelligence service), the FSB, to many within the army, to naval, to internal troops and riot police.

Good bet these guys are GRU or one of the army successor groups. With that said, given the location, and the assets they are securing, it's "possible" that they are naval spetznaz.

I posted in another place, but will do so here also. I think the bulk of those "unknown" Russian soldiers are really sailors from the Russian naval base in the Crimea. There are probably a few special forces types to liven things up, but I think Putin is pulling a typical Russian fake show by dressing the swabbies in army type uniforms and sending them out to play invading army.

To make it look more impressive, the photographer should've cropped out the two dudes standing around all casual behind the last bus. In the foreground it looks all tactical…but then you have other dudes standing up in broad daylight facing the same direction everyone is running from. It looks like they are taking a smoke break from their job, they come out back, and are watching some dudes run drills.

Imported ammo. Just an executive order away from being history.

Guess we've got all the value out of this we're likely to.
