So many quotable lines in this article:

"They are effective. You recover stolen cars and firearms," Fulwood said. "You've got to have a lot of them if you're going to have them."

Some residents expressed support for the plan yesterday, saying they are willing to submit to the checks if it makes the neighborhood safer. "We can't endure any more homicides," said neighborhood activist India Henderson.

"I knew eventually we'd be a police state," said Wilhelmina Lawson, who has lived in the neighborhood for 20 years.

"I think the general consensus is that we have to do something because people live in fear," Council member Harry Thomas Jr. said. "What would you rather have?" he asked. "A positive pattern of [police] checking things . . . or these folks who come into the community and wreak havoc?"

How about the freedom to protect myself from the criminals, instead of having to submit to your jackboots?

Oh, Lord. In the comments, there are people suggesting that police search everyone entering or leaving the city for weapons and drugs.

This is how the Republic dies- to the sound of sheep bleating for the Government to provide for their safety.
