I'd like to form some picture of what they actually use in Iraq, for the US Army, say, platoon level.

I'd welcome relevant links and any comment.

Groups of equipment/angle of view:

1. Battle dress, helmets, personal armor; performance, manufacturers, cost.

2. Items of military utility:
Night vision goggles, radios, etc. Manufacturer and cost again, battery type and life.

3. Weapons: knives and bayonets, hand grenades, handguns, shotguns, rifles and scopes, machine guns, grenade launchers; amounts of ammo carried, etc.

4. Vehicles:
For instance, Humvee. Performance in detail, down to tire pressure; armament, like M2 or Minigun; ammo supply; crew.

Weapons preferred by the enemy are also of interest, down to black market cost.

Sorry if I weren't clear enough, but grateful in advance, Alexey

This is rather general, but here's estimations of their forces.

http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/world/iran/ground-equipment.htm

They have a a decent sized army (~400,000), with large reserves (~300,000). There's also a "people's militia" type thing estimated with ~100,000 active volunteers and ~300,000 reservists... Though they claim that they can mobilize in excess of 1 million.

My figures might be off, so please excuse me if they are

Who knows

-edit-

These figures are for Iran, I read the thread wrong :neener:

Thank you very much!

Where did I see a Humvee with a Minigun on this forum?

What are automatic grenade launchers to be mounted on Humvees?

Best regards, Alexey

don't like the idea of this thread I motion for it to be closed asap, i have a bad bad felling about it!

Why? None of the info requested is really classified and is readily available online.

Besides the BGs over there already know the answer to most of these questions

Geez, tinfoil hat time. They're just curious as to what we're using now, and nobody would post anything classified. Chill out.

that's cool ya'll do what you like but i will not be taking part in this thread, which i am sure you guys won't miss me any anyways. maybe ya'll should think a little harder before you post. but who am i to say that?:scrutiny:

manedwolf, i am chilled out and can do so any situation i have been put in, i am a very laid back person. i simple wanted to express my dislike for the idea of the thread, in a nice way but you guys have a different ooinion, and that you are intitled to, like i said who am I? you can post what ever you want in rebutal to my posts, but i will not post any futher on this thread. if there is any issue i will be more than happy to talk to ya'll individually on the pm. thanks!

Even the webpages the army has for the public they brag about the equipment to get people to sign up, so they are hardly a state secret and need closing up. Its not going to get people killed to suggest they use the M4 rifle.

Do you really think I can't decide what to put on my Humvee?:what:

I'm interested in unclassified information; you can keep your fine details too. A broad outlook on equipment; not just pictures but some data on performace too. For instance: they press back into service M14; what does that mean on platoon level? How much ammo do they carry? That, and anything of interest...

So far I haven't seen a link to anything but prictues. :)

Best regards, Alexey

Question, how is it determined who gets an M4 and who gets a full size M16?

From what I understand, the m4 is being issued primarily to secondary units, such as tankers, arty, engies, cooks, anyone who isnt a grunt. Also being used by special forces and some grunt units with lots of CQB planned.

there's one....try google you can find just about anything

Sure... :). It's just that the google is apt to turn out more than you have bargained for. Anybody interested in the subject the way it's been presented can be of great help by directing the right way.

Best regards, Alexey

Before the technical details of the equipment (common knowledge very often), I'd like to have a list (less than comprehensive will do) of equipment to be found about an infantry platoon in Iraq, from night goggles to vehicles, with weapons somewhere in between. I hope this is more or less clear and innocuous request :).

Best regards, Alexey

Mmm... Yet another take. If you were interested in what a Russian infantry platoon is, I would have referred you to the Field Manual. I just don't know where to begin with the US infantry. I keep on asking about obvious, perhaps, but what is obvious to you may not be obvious to me. Am I asking for too much?

Best regards, Alexey

Where did I see a Humvee with a Minigun on this forum?

That was me, go look at punk-rock.com and click on 'iraq pictures'

The pistol in the pictures is a SIG Sauer, and the rifle I carried was an M-16A2E4, which is the last of the full-autos issued. Made by FN.

Oh yeah, and the shiny gold-plated one is an otherwise normal AK-47 :D
