The AK-47 is a Russian made, selective fire assault rifle. They are no longer able to be registered with the tax office, and prior to 1986. when the registry closed, there were less than 200 here.

I really wish folks would stop calling their WASRs and SARs and other sporting Kalashnikovs "AK-47s", when they're not.

It's an AK or a Kalashnikov, but "AK-47" has become a hot-button-term in the mass media. The media has made it so that anyone who owns an "AK-47" is either a criminal or an evil terrorist - so, to those folks who believe everything they hear or see from the media, when you say "Ah yeah, I just got a new AK-47 today (albeit it's really called a WASR-10)", they instantly see you as a criminal or terrorist.

Political rhetoric aside, an AK-47 refers to a weapon built by the Ruassian gov't for the Russian military that can be traced to a very specific production run. Most of the weapons that are referred to as 'AK-47s' are clones of the AK-47; these weapons are produced by different countries and have different identification and as such, atleast by the educated, are referred to by said identification (WARS, SAR, etc.).

It would be like saying BOSE AUDIO makes a great component sound system and then referring to all multiple component audio systems as a BOSE AUDIO system.

Political rhetoric aside, words and names are important.

You are going down the street with your legal semiauto 1919 in the trunk on your way to the range.

How much trouble do you think will be stirred up should you be pulled over for a tail light out or other reason and tell the cop you have a "machine gun" in the trunk?

Hey Duke !

Who said a Saiga isn't an AK? Granted, they're neutered for importation, but it's still an AK receiver under there. Simply remove the goofy trigger and the plate under the receiver exposes the real AK trigger hole and pistol grip hole and in a couple of hours with some basic hand tools and $100 in conversion parts, you can have an AK that's as functional as any other variant, better built than the WASR's and brand new !
I've owned a few Saiga's and other AK's and I think the Saiga is a great platform to build on.

What is the difference between a SAR and a WSAR? A guy wanted to trade me his SAR for my Russian SKS.

SAR is built on a more AKM-like receiver, and has mag dimples to locate the magazine left/right instead of riveted-in spacer plates.

Most people consider the SAR's a little nicer than the WASR's. The only downside is that SAR's do not have bayonet lugs or threaded muzzles (whereas post-2004 WASR's do), although you can have the muzzle threaded (14x1 LH) if you want.
