I live in Pennsylvania; handguns here can only be transferred through an FFL, though long arms can be sold privately.
I have a good friend who had some rifles stolen in a break in around 12 years ago. The state troopers who showed up to take his report had a list of every firearm he’d ever bought through an FFL. They went down the list and asked him if he still had each one in his possession or if it was one that he was reporting as stolen.
Make of that what you will.

Youngest son does the 'LGS' route 3-4 times a week. Cabelas, Sportsman Warehouse, Jax, wally world and a couple of small shops and has been pretty lucky to find 9mm, 223, 556, 38, 357 and 22LR..AND altho not pre covid prices, still not bad($15 for 50 9mm, 1/2 of the online goug-a-matic places).

    Denver, Westminster area.

I guess I should feel lucky. I picked up a box of 50 Federal 9mm brass case for $15 flat. Granted it was only one box. Normally I wouldn't bother with one box but that's not my attitude anymore. I'll buy a box here or there of anything til case quantities are available at normal prices again.

Good for him, but frankly that sounds like a lot of work.

It's a grind. I went a ways out of my way this week to get some .270 and 708 ammo. 1 box per caliber limits so you do what you gotta do.

    Short answers: no & no

At big box stores in my area (southeast), nothing.
    At higher traffic LGS’s, nothing.
At one small town LGS, one shelf and he’s limiting it to 1 box per customer. I didn’t even ask the price.

Online I see some ammo in odd cartridges - mostly rifle- but there are two vendors that I’ve used with ammo; one has reman .45acp & 10mm in good quantities and reasonable prices with limited .45colt cowboy. One has 9mm FMJ but at $0.60 per round.

Obama was the greatest firearms salesman to date, but it appears the Biden might surpass him in both firearms and ammunition sales.

Guy I know who works at a local Dunhams in Michigan says the store is not limiting the number of boxes that sell and that the ammo comes in and two or three people are waiting at the door and just load up the cart and take everything within the first ten minutes.

So here is West Michigan I am not seeing any ammo on the shelf, and the LGS I go to has not had anything but a little Tul 9mm for the last three months.

I feel sorry for the guy. He can not get stock.

Last time I stopped by the local shop, they had a limit of 2 boxes of pistol ammo a month. Rifle ammo could only be bought if you were buying a rifle. That was about a week ago. They did have 9mm, 40S&W and 45Acp on hand.

Agreed with gunlaw. Keep the gun. You'll shoot the ammo, then it'll be gone and so will the gun. You'll end up regretting it. The ammo situation will eventually resolve.

In in Colorado, we have the following...

    1. Big boxes putting ammo out a reasonable prices (9mm FMJ at $15ish per 50) that sells out in a few hours, even with limits.

    2. LGS with non-inflated pricing but no stock. I have actually sold some of my cache to my local shop so they can supply a box with a new gun purchase. This is because my relationship with the shop goes back to high school and I like them.

    3. LGS with plenty of stock, but at inflated prices (9mm FMJ at $35-40 per 50). I have not bought much of anything there.

Another Executive Order might open the border with Mexico, in which case maybe we can get the Mexican cartels to run ammo in instead of drugs!! Yay!!

Note to Google: I'M JUST KIDDING (bots have no sense of satire or humor)

I haven't been in a gun store since February or March. But my search results of ammo online say no to available or cheaper.

Me too! He and four of his buddies hang out in front of Walmart and on a given day (provided by an inside connection) they rush the ammo counter and buy every round that just came in. We saw these same guys following Sandy Hook. Really amazing how they manage to do this at every Walmart nationally but they do because I heard it from a friend who heard it from a friend who...

Following Sandy Hook I figured once the entire nation was well enough stocked it would end but I was way off on my timing as it went longer than many of us dreamed. Gave the son-in-law 100 of 38 Special as a stocking stuffer for a Christmas present which I hand loaded. Overall I don't see this ending anytime soon but for those who do catch anything in stock at a major retailer I have not seen a dramatic price increase. So I figure timing is everything for those trying to get lucky. Right place at the right time. When I say a major retailer I am not referring to some of the same online retailers who screwed everyone the last time. Then too, nobody had their arm twisted to buy from them.

Anyway I don't see any of this ending anytime soon. The political atmosphere alone sends a strong message. Talk about a perfect storm. I really need to take a good look at some of the powder, brass and bullets I have laying around as someone may have a use for stuff I likely will never use.

$40 for 500 rounds? It may just be me, but something don't smell right about that ad. Maybe its just a misprint, and its for 50 rounds. I dunno. Nothing about the entire site seems on the square.

I’m in Northern Virginia, just outside DC. Even before covid local large gun stores stopped selling guns and ammo, likely due to political pressure and a diminishing hunting community. Although, we have a large military community. Closest Cabela’s, Pass Bro, and the similar are about 30-40miles away. Small gun stores haven’t had anything for a while .

I’ve seen local private sales starting to drop in price a little. I’ve been lucky grabbing .357 mag a decent price online, $25 for Box of 50 federal 158gr JSP (W/ free shipping from a lgs). I’ll buy a couple boxes, check back an hour later and “out of stock”. Haven’t found 9mm at a price I’m willing to pay yet. Usually running $40-50 a box of target 9mm, through private sellers since local stores have nothing.

One thing that would surely help the ammo situation is if folks would please quit supporting the resellers. These people use their BIL, wife, divorced wife, cousins (meth addicts), strangers for a dollar (meth addicts), friends (meth addicts), relatives (meth addicts and whinos), strange people Nixon masks or whatever to get around the limits and buy up everything and then hawk it to folks at a profit. Just stop.
