I am still not seeing people dumping guns like I expected to see by this time. The next month things will probably change due to Christmas and the need to turn that $1500 DPMS Oracle into cash but right now I am just not seeing any deals locally. $450 for a gun that is $500 new seems to be the type of deal I am seeing.

Not around here. The LGS, pawnshops and local guns show dealers still have used guns at peak panic prices.

My lgs never did jack prices up and neither did his distributors, of course he still had to deal with the shortage, but things have been good since about November of last year as far as him being able to get what he orders. Others in the area on the other hand are still selling at panic prices and still limiting people to 3 boxes of ammo regardless of what it is, even though they have more than enough in stock.

why would anyone be dumping guns?
I expect that many people bought guns back in early 2013 during the panic and overpaid. Many guns, especially "assault rifles" were hard to find and people paid exorbitant prices when they found one.
With Christmas coming around it is normal to see a lot of used guns hit the pawn shops as people are short of cash and the latest GI Joe costs $50. This time of year is always a good time to buy used guns and I keep expecting this year to be even better.

why would anyone be dumping guns?
The theory is that when the massive panic was in full swing some significant percentage of the buyers were folks who were either only mildly interested in guns, couldn't really afford to spend the going rate, were doubling up or buying in bulk looking to flip those guns as the market value climbed endlessly, or a combination of all three.

As the panic subsides and the market price collapses back down, and the market gets saturated with those guns, and as the other bills and demands of day-to-day life press on people, large numbers of those folks will put those "extra" guns, or guns they just never shoot, back out on the market, even at a big loss, just to scrape up some ready cash.

That's the theory, based on the fact that while we saw gun sales numbers well over 2x what we saw 10 years ago, we don't see 2x the number of shooters at the ranges.

The reality is, though, that guns don't take up much room and are very durable goods. Most folks can stash away a rifle or two (or ten!) in a closet or attic rather than feeling some great need to go sell it for half of what they paid for it. Just because the market has gone soft doesn't mean everyone with that commodity has to sell it.

Not here. Not on the one's I'd want: Anything wood and steel, anything that revolves. Plastic galore (of which I own many already and thus am not interested in that used market), but nothing "old".

The last good used gun I saw for a reasonable price I bought, it was last Dec

There's also the theory that people ran out and bought a gun while they thought they still could before the ax fell making it impossible for anyone to ever own one again. They didn't want to be caught without one or they thought they could turn it for a profit after the ban. And when they realized that the gun ban wasn't going to happen they knew they didn't need to worry about keeping money tied up in a gun. They could get one later if they actually needed one and those that were thinking they might make money realized that they weren't going to make money. In fact they realized they were going to lose money and they want to turn their guns before the price totally drops out. That i the same kind of panic that drove the purchase of all those guns. It can work the other way too.

Finding enough to keep me on my toes.

I have picked up some decent bargains lately. I got a post-64 model 70, a Rem 700 ADL and a Ruger 77 Tanger for $400-$420 range. All of them were in good condition. In fact the Ruger was about as nice as any tanger that I have seen in the last 20 years. Flipped all three on GunBroker. Found a Austin& Halleck 420 Muzzleloader at a public auction and should do well with it. There are bargains out there.

I'm going to the Wanenmacher GunShow in Tulsa this weekend. I'm eager to see how such guns might affect the show, that is, guns bought by....let's call them 'amateurs' who now want to get rid of them. Or guns brought by entreprenuers who thought they could make a few bucks and now find they have too much inventory. I've followed certain guns like Kimber pistols. There was a time when getting one was hard, but now at gun shows I see lots of tables full of every model with $50 discounts and other incentives. Such are the vagaries of the market place.

I'd say $879 for a Colt 6920 is an amazing price.

Yeah it is, especially considering I paid $1,100 for mine and I thought that was good at the time :(

In regards to used guns, I haven't seen any bargains. They typically seem to be 90% or thereabouts of new. The other day I saw on Uncle Henry's (a weekly Maine classified thingy) some guy selling a used Ruger P95 with two 15 Rd mags and case for $400. I paid $300 for the exact same setup new about two years ago

Decent Prices on Guns ?

On the internet, I see prices for S&W and Colt .38 Special (Model 10 and Police Positive), four and five times what I paid for nice ones (really nice), in the late 1990's. I paid $150 (for each of these three) at the right time. Now they are asking $ 600 to $1,200 for these same ones, in the same condition. That doesn't include possible taxes, S&H, and background check.

Also, I got in on the last C&R surge at the end of 2012. The P-64's, CZ-82's, and Mosin Nagant 91/30's are still around, but higher. The Russian 1895 Nagant's are gone !

Maybe I don't have all the facts, but I haven't seen any "decent" prices otherwise.

Not at all.

Prices for used guns are still sky high in my area, and places like Gun Broker echo this as well.

I haven’t seen much of anything I’m interested in for a decent price for a while now. It seemed like prices were starting to come down about 6/12 months ago, but then went right back up to panic prices. I got a few decent buys last Oct/Dec 2013 but not since.

Hoping that there will be some cash strapped sellers approaching Christmas and/or tax time.

I am about full up on new firearms other than a couple of bucket list guns. I am always looking for a good price on revolvers (ain't that funny) or older model rifles. Two stores yesterday and the only thing I saw of interest was the 336 but it was a duplicate of a duplicate. I may pick up a couple of AK-47s while the price is decent but I am mainly looking for the Christmas rush.
Many people have guns around the house that they got from their uncle or grandpa and when cash is needed they take them to the pawn shop. I also usually get a couple of good offers from friends that need cash for the Holidays.

I have done fairly well with buying off a certain consignment rack -- although I have asked a few times if certainly prices were incorrectly marked (high!)?

Around here, gun shop/pawn shop prices for used guns are so close to new price they're not worth it. When they're not more than retail for new guns...

Back in '98-'99 I wanted a generator for the house. I'd seen people buy them, fail to maintain them, and sell them for a pittance or junk them. When the pre-Millennium buying frenzy hit I couldn't afford one, but I figured by '01 I'd have my choice of used ones to pick from. That never happened either...

Four used Sig 232/230s were in the Cordova TN gun shop yesterday-a very strange surplus. Never saw one there before.
The prices were $450-500 for these guns which all appeared to be in excellent condition.

Maybe even Handguns had been impulsively grabbed in the recent panic (?) and now seemed unneeded/unused, or people move up to a larger round.
And that same gun shop has been literally fully Stuffed with guns for over a year (many of them used-leaning against the back wall), much more than in the past-various 'generic guns' and several milsurp rifles.

I have been seeing pretty "normal" prices, that are not really inflated. Then again, during the panic, the shops I frequent never gouged.

I will say that "decent prices" is a relative term. Am I buying the gun or selling the gun? :D

A "slightly used" gun, properly cared for, is worth no less than a brand-new, unfired gun, IMO. It might even be worth more; some AR's act up when new, need to be "worn in" from what I've seen in many of them, so if they become more reliable after having a couple hundred rounds through the pipe, I'd say it's worth more than a new, troublesome gun. If I bought a gun in a "panic buy" and paid too much for it, I'm sure not going to take a loss and sell it because I don't need it or want it. Hang onto it long enough, it will be worth what you paid for it (especially during the next panic).

Judging from the prices at the gun show last week, the older the gun, within limits, the more it's worth, at least to the seller. I bought an old SxS shotgun, hasn't been made since the '80s, and the guy wanted twice what it sold new for. (I didn't pay that much, though). Through some fierce dickering and a trade that went my way in value, I got the gun for just a bit less than its market value.

To me, a gun, whether it's a handgun, shotgun, or rifle, does not decrease in value unless it is seriously abused, neglected (in care and maintenance), or has just had the action and barrel shot out of it.

Just a reminder that we Still have a hostile to guns president and the senate doesn't change hands until after the years up. I wouldn't dream of taking a big loss on anything as long as this president is in power.

I wouldn't relax any from now to the end of the year either. A lot can happen in a short time.
