Is Glock 19 worth having vs. other modern polymer guns

Of all the guns I have, I dont' have a Glock. I'm looking at G19, it's pretty nice, but nothing special compared to Walther P99 and HK P2000. I'm wondering if there any particular reasons to get a Glock, 19 specifically.

My first two handguns were a G17 and a G19 and that was a long time ago and a lot of guns ago. I've sold and traded along the way, but I still have these 2 guns. I probably have in excess of 20,000 rounds through each gun and all I've ever done to these guns it clean them and shoot them. They go
bang ever time. I think the G19 is my preference for frame size. If you are trying to decide between other players in the plastic pistol market, I would look at the SA XD's, SW M&P's and even H&K. You can also check out www.glocktalk.com A lot of great info there. I plan on getting a G34 here soon which will be my IDPA pistol. Good luck, Glocks are great guns...

One thing i heard about is that once you go Glock, your point of aim will be adjusting to their unique grip angle. This will mess up other traditional angle guns such as 1911. Any truth to it?

I have a difficult time with glocks due to the hump in the rear of the grip.
That said, it would probably like shooting a 1911 with an oversized arched mainspring housing.

Unfortunately, i HATE arched mainspring housings. Flat for me!
I'm going to be sending mine off to get a grip reduction to make it feel more like a 1911, or just trade it for a para-.40, and have it reamed to 10mm.

At the risk of starting another stupid Glock vs. xxxx debate, I'll just quickly give you my very biased opimion.

There is nothing like the Glock as far as reliability goes. They are more than adequately accurate, simple and damned near maintenance free. They are inexpensive to modify and customize (compared to many other brands) to your tastes. They are middle-of-the-road priced and incredibly durable.
The whole ka-boom thing is highly over-rated and is a popular point for some folks because they can't think of anything else that is remotely logical to continue their demonization of the Glock.

I have six of them and plan to get at LEAST one more. I have been deeply involved in guns for nearly over 40 years and have extensive experience with just about everything out there. It took me a full 3 years to make the transition from 1911/BHP to the Glock. Now, I can't for the life of me figure out why it took so long. I have at least one Glock will take care of 99% of my handgunning needs from self-defense to big-game hunting. I killed a deer with G20 last year and plan to get my elk this year with the same gun.

GLOCK 19

The G19 is very worthy to be in any gun owners collection. I have one, and it is definitely not in any danger whatsoever in being traded or sold. Can't say that about any of my other guns except G20 and G29. The 19 has very controllable recoil, almost made me feel like a surgeon at the range, because of its accuracy . It does have two strong competitors though, Springfield XD-9, and Walther P99. I personally would recommend any of those three. If I could I would own them all .

Call it therapy, but I resisted the G19 and Glocks in general for a long time. Over the years I've owned Glocks in other calibers, & wasn't satisfied. I shot a buddy's 17 and really liked it. Anyway, I picked up my USPs but still I had a calling of sorts for a Glock in my collection. A couple years ago, I picked up a G19 & the universe is at peace
So...short story long...Get yourself that G19 and stop wondering

Well, the Glock pistols are certainly reliable, and durable. If the G19 fits your hand go for it. I've moved on to other handguns that fit me better, and that subsequently I shoot better. If a G19 fits you and you're accurate with it then there's really no reason not to get one. The prices right now with a market full police surplus Glocks gets you alot of gun for the money. I think they're a pretty good value.

To me the short answer is no. Although the people who have moved over to the dark side of handgunning will tell you different. Those people remind me of a cult, or an ex-smoker trying to get everyone else to quit.

The longer answer, they all have pretty much the same type of long DAO triggerpull, they all pretty much have the same big square slide.The XD seems a little more attractive to me because of the way they feel in my hand, the only advantage I see to the Glock is it's been around longer than the others. As far as reliability I doubt seriously a Glock is any more reliable than an HK or the BHP's I normally shoot. Although the BHP's seers seem to wear out after about 50-60 years and need to be replaced. The reason people bring up the kabooms in Glocks is because it's not a good thing to have happen, even though it is a very small percentage of them it seemed to be a fairly regular occurrance for a while.

Having said that, I don't own any of the ones mentioned, my only polymer frame gun is a Witness PS in 9mm, carry is cocked and locked, or DA if for some odd reason you prefer that, costs about 1/2-2/3 of the others, much better grip angle for my shooting. I've had mine about 5-6 years with several thousand rounds through it with no problems at all.

RE. grip angle and point of aim, I have been blessed to have been reloading and shooting for 48 years. For the past 14 years I have carried both Glocks and 1911's to the range and shot them, alternately, with no problem. I do not think that you will experience any difficulties. The best example that I can give is that it is much the same thing as owning and driving two very different vehicles. No problem.

By the way, I love both types equally, although an inventory of the safe might show a preference for 1911's, the bedstand and waistband would support the view that I prefer the Glock(s).

I've owned this Glock 19 for close to 20 years. The only change I made to it was some night sights last year. IMHO the Glock 19 is perfect for CCW. As mentioned before its not elegant or beautiful. It is functional, reliable, and sized to be concealable yet not so small that its sight radius is too short for accurate shooting. Its 15 round high capacity magazines are stocked with +P police ammo which it will shoot with no worry about damage to the pistol. For me its status is one of a well liked handy tool that's been in the box for a long time. A gun I'd miss if it was gone but not one I'm attracted to for its craftsmanship like fine old Colt or S&W revolvers.

I recently got my Glock 17 back from Robar. They cut down the grip to take G19 mags and did a grip reduction. I guess you could call it a Glock 19L!

The G19 is my favorite autoloader. Other guns fit my hand better, other guns are better looking, and some are more accurate as target guns. But for me, it is the perfect sidearm. Accurate, reliable, compact, holds 15+1, and can digest +p+ loads like its spitting bb's. I bought mine used, so I don't mind getting it banged up. I've carried it everywhere. I shoot it better than any gun I've ever shot. I think its the best polymer gun out there, although I respect alot of the HK's...
Really, its a hard gun to beat.

And this is precisely why I have one too. My husband's 12 year old G19 is now my primary Glock and I wouldn't trade it for the world. It fits my hands well (most of the Glocks do, even the full-sized), I do damn good with it at the range, and there's a certain aesthetically-pleasing look to it in my eyes (what can I say, I drive a 2nd Generation Dodge Ram as well, you've gotta love that bulldog muzzle on that truck). As Goldilocks would say (and my husband for that matter as he sees me replying to this thread): "It's not too big, not too small, not too heavy, nor too light..... it's just right". And so it is, at least for me.

My G19 is one gun that will have to be pried from my cold, dead hands. It'll never be sold or traded, though we keep adding more Glocks to the stable.

I like that no matter what, it'll always go bang, especially when I most need it to.

Think you said it best yourself - they are nice (if they fit), but don't do anything special compared to Walther or HK. In fact, the latter have a feature or three worth having.

If you decide they are "just perfect" for YOU because..., then OK great reason to buy, but otherwise, they are just another choice.

Well compared to those, it is proportionally smaller, lighter, with a higher capacity. With no external safeties or internal lock.

There's a reason posters above are raving on the 19 as their favorite. The GLOCK compacts are the perfect intersection of maximum power & capacity and minimum size and weight.

Glock 19: 15 x 9mm @ < 30oz FULLY LOADED!

If you just want to get a GLOCK to see what all the fuss is about- you picked the right one imo.

I'm seriously thinking about going the G19 and G26 route, myself. My 1st-gen G17 shoots great and comes in at 32.05 oz with 17+1 but sometimes having just a wee bit smaller can make the difference for comfort for both weight and concealability. I shot my friends wife's 2nd-gen G19 a while back and it was a great little weapon.
