Hey I don't know if this is the right place to post this but I was talking to a guy at a store here in KY and he said that they are going to start making primers that have a 2 year shelf life to keep people from stock piling ammo. Is this true??? Can they be so ignorant to thing that anyone that likes to keep plenty of ammo on hand is a militant, criminal, terrorist, or zealot?

Say it ain't so Joe. Say it ain't so.

That would be quite an invention. Ha! No, I wouldn't worry about this. However, there is an inch in the anti crowd that they do wish to limit your ammo purchasing and holding. The biggest concern I'd have right now is the microstamping garbage.

No this is not true. Comes up every few months and has been around for many years.

Anytime you are tempted to start a story with "I heard in a gun store......" Just assume it's wrong :)

Just a rehash of an old rumor/scare tactic/bs/.........forgetaboutit.......:)

I wonder if you'll be singing the same tune after it happens? I've found that often times when a rumor like this hits the street and is quickly swept under the rug, it is the result of a "secret" agenda that leaked.

This seems to be one of many "the scary democratic party is in office" driven rumors. Last time they were around was back when Clinton got in office.

Seems when this occurs, we will be told of all manner of silly and scary things that will befall us, so as well as your guns, you'd better hide the livestock, guard your kiddies and women folk, and place both hands firmly on your ass.

The republicans are much more subtle at what they do, so you dont usually get the panic. Then again, the right seems to be of a superstitious bunch and easily whipped into any little frenzy at the apparent appearance of a spirit or booger man.

I swear, we're our own worst enemies sometimes.

Think on it-

Two seperate and distinct production lines at the manufacturers. One for civilians, one for military.

Nope. May be possible, but were they ever to try and impliment such a monstrosity, the primer makers would raise one heck of a storm over it.

BTW-
Welcome to THR ironhead.

The most amusing claim surrounding such rumors is that the ammo/primer manufacturers would like this because they would sell more ammo. That claim is too ludicrious to even acknowledge. The effect on the supply chain would likely be truly devastating to ammo sales as everything would have to be pretty much ordered on demand. People wouldn't buy more than what they were going to shoot in the near future, stores wouldn't carry much inventory, distributors would minimize their inventory, and the manufacturers would have to only make things as ordered as no one would want the primers that had been sitting on the shelf for 6 months. Sales would go down, prices would go up.

It's kind of laughable when you think about it.

As was mentioned before this rumor has been circulating for years. Here's a reference from 1994: http://groups.google.com/group/rec.guns/browse_thread/thread/ef898e8f7cddf6ee/542280c913cbb4f

That same rumor also caused the greatest primer shortage in history back then, although this time the Obama scare one is far worse.

The problem is that nothing degrades "at two years". It would degrade slowly over time so after a year your pirmers might not work 50% of the time. Of course that doesn't matter to them.

They must "warn the customer".. lol

...

- These primers will self-destruct in 2yrs -

Just like the warnings on Cigarette pkgs.. lol

In most gun stores that I've been in, I wouldn't believe them if they said, "You're in a gun store." There are a few exceptions, but not many.

I heard that same rumor earlier this year. I knew the guy was lying as soon as he said "you know how you peel back the plastic seal on primers? that is going to activate the shelf life" lol what a moron!

For what it's worth, something along these lines is mentioned in the July 2009 issue of America's First Freedom. Entitled "Koh, No!" written by Dave Kopel. It'a an article on Harold Koh, the recently confirmed legal adviser in the State Dept. I'm going to type word for word as I couldn't find the article linked via the magazine website.

Koh admitted, "We are a long way from persuading governments to accept a flat ban on the trade of legal arms". He urged that the next steps be the creations of international arms registries; giving non-governmental organizations-e.g, the power to monitor government compliance with international gun control; and "stronger domestic regulation". As a mechanism for implementing the international gun control agenda, Koh pointed to the Organization of the American States (OAS) arms control treaty. In April, President Obama announced that he would push for U.S. Senate ratification of that treaty. The OAS treaty needs to be supplemented, Koh said, with "supply-side controls in the United States". As an example, he pointed to the "particualrly intriguing idea" of "promoting 'smart' or perishable ammunition". That is, "bullets that would degrade and become unusable over time".

You are going to have to start weeding out obvious BS on your own when you hear it from obvious BS spreaders.........

It is a rumor that stems from a half truth.

When they started making "green" primers many of them had absolutely horrible shelf lives. Some of them would not even last long enough to be sold.
Thier lifespan has increased since then.

The best and longest lifespan primers are still lead based, or if you go back even further, mercury based ones still fire even after 100 years.
Lead styphnate, mercury fulminate, lead azide, etc are some of the most reliable and proven long term primers.

So while it is merely a gunshop rumor, it has its basis in the fact that the most reliable proven primers are ones that can be and have been attacked under the pretense of toxicity or environmental concerns.
Much like there is not a single other legal and affordable metal suitable as a lead substitute (even most bismuth is mined as a small percentage byproduct of lead mining while costing many times as much with not enough to even supply in the world to meet a legislated demand for most or all ammo) for bullets. As a result the lead of bullets is attacked, and few could afford to shoot any volume of rounds from another material, nevermind that reloaders cannot make thier own bullets like with lead.

As a result antis attack both the bullets and the primers of ammunition in any attempt to further thier actual cause: Fewer guns and fewer rounds of ammunition possessed or affordable to shrinking portions of the population. With greater numbers of places restricting or banning use of affordable materials in activities such as hunting or target shooting.

Hey guys. Never said it was a gun store. Just ran into this guy in the same biz as me in front of a gas station. Shoulda clarified I guess. I thought it a strange comment which is why I came here for the real deal. Am glad to hear that it was bull but the Koh comments are just disturbing as hell.

Yep, it's a rumor with a half-truth.

If they ever started to mandate lead-free "green" primers, you can kiss the idea of reliable ammo that is more than a few years old good-bye.

Currently, I'm not aware of any legislative body that is pushing this, but give California and New York a little time, they'll catch on soon enough.

"They are going to make you fill out a form, and then they have to call some government agency before you can get your pistol."

BS

Never gonna happen.
