Which is the best truck gun?

Well, what are the considerations for a "trunk gun" (not a truck gun since I don't drive a truck)..I've debated that in my head quite a few times. I've concluded a few things that are purely my opinion.

One of the criteria for a trunk gun would be self defense. In that scenario, a bolt action rifle is simply not acceptable. Semi automatic is best due to rate of fire thus increasing hit probability in a shorter amount of time.

Any rifle meant to be kept in a vehicle must be able to sustain abuse and weather conditions. Vehicles get hot/cold/dry/humid.

Any firearm in a vehicle must be expendable. It must not be a serious financial burden or impact if it is lost or stolen. Thus, the cheaper in cost, the better.

A rifle kept in a trunk would carry out a role to be used when out and about. This could be self defense, this could be used against dangerous animals, it could be used in a SHTF scenario, a riot, to defend against a serious criminal action in public...For that, you need a cartridge that is capable.

A vehicle weapon is likely to be used at either out in a rural area where you'd want serious power, in an urban area, where you'd also want power, or in or around and about other vehicles, where again, you'd want power.

You need a cartridge that will incapacitate even an armored target, such as a lunatic wearing a kevlar vest. You need something that can penetrate medium barriers such as the common walls found in suburban/urban environments. Being a vehicle kept weapon, it must be able to be effective against vehicles. This means the penetration of auto glass, car body and interiors.

The AR platform is too expensive, and aside from using SS109 or M855, not the best penetrator. The AK is also too expensive (to get a decent one). M1 carbine is also expensive, and fires a cartridge that is underpowered for use against structures or vehicles. Although it, like the AK and the AR has the capacity for 30rds.

The best choice is the SKS. It gives you 10 good rounds (or 20 if you get the larger mag) of 7.62x39mm which is ideal at the practical ranges one would encounter for a vehicle kept "out and about" type rifle for virtually any imagineable threat you'd encounter. All at a very low cost, with good reliability, good ability to sustain abuse, and in its original military condition (not converted or butchered up, or a military copy using substandard metallurgy that is junk) It is also tough enough to be used as a blunt force weapon, or if you have a bayonet, well...

It has all the advantages, and no disadvantage. Size/Weight might be one, but this is a trunk gun and not something you carry around or use often.

+1 on MTM's Post

Great replies from DTOM and MTM, their reasoning is hard to argue with.

The 25mm chain gun used on the Bradley is good for trucks. Not as jazzy as an HE round out of a 105 or 120 tank gun though.
"...A vehicle weapon...in an urban area..." Must be legal to start with. Then it must be a rifle that you don't care how pretty it stays. It won't.
"...such as a lunatic wearing a kevlar vest...effective against vehicles..." Any rifle cartridge will penetrate a kevlar vest. There's no point whatsoever in trying to stop any vehicle with a rifle. Physics doesn't allow it. No rifle cartridge will stop any vehicle. If you're in your vehicle and somebody takes a run at you with theirs, you're better off staying seat belted in your's and driving away.
"...the common walls found in suburban/urban environments..." If you're in a vehicle, there are no walls. If you shoot through any wall or window, you are responsible for where that bullet ends up. If it hits anything or anybody you didn't intend to hit, you are responsible. Urban or rural.
I must agree with the SKS though. They're usually ratty to begin with, shoot accurately enough for close ranges, aren't expensive to buy, has no felt recoil and the 7.62 x 39 certainly has enough power.
"...I don't drive a truck..." Geezuz. Where's your head at? Cars are useless.

The main use of a truck gun out here is picking off a coyote as the opportunity presents itself.

That puts the Remington 700 (suitably scoped) in a .22-250 or .243 heads and shoulders above the rest.

I don't ever envision myself shooting ten rounds at anybody or anything, but I never been in L.A. or New Orleans...then again, I never intend to, either.

Hate your choices, so not voting

Look, in most trucks in my rural area you're gonna find a .30-30 lever action, a semi auto .22 rifle, a 12 gauge pump or a Mini 14. Realizing you said "rifle", that eliminates the 12 gauge. But NONE of the other rifles are even mentioned!

:what:

In Washington state, it is illegal to keep a loaded rifle in a vehicle. I want something that is mag loaded. I like my Yugo SKS, but don't think much of the magazine options, or of fumbling with stripper clips. I voted for the AK.

My truck gun is an All Weather 77/22 in .22 WMR. And for my purposes it's perfect or obviously I'd get something else....I'm like the guy from Nebraska only from Missouri, except I've been to L.A. and New Orleans both. I won't be going back though. Around here when the tornadoes come we don't get roving gangs of looters, we get neighbors coming out to help. And Red Dawn just ain't real high on my to worry about list either. So I'm sticking with my .22 and that's that.

I took the sks as the best of the ones povided. Think of changeing the m16 to ar15?
My choice in my real life would be more likely be a 30-30. Useable power, medium cost, low profile. Downside is that it is slow to load.
I very much like the ar15,quick to load/reload ,good power, good capicity, but is hurt by evil black rifle profile. One part of me wants the most effective rifle ,but many possible uses of a truck rifle have some chance of interaction with the public/law enforcement make me look hard at the profiile issue.

Requirements for a trunk gun:

1) Cheap, verging on disposable. If I'm involved in an auto accident, the last thing I want to worry about is replacing a rifle that cost a lot of money.

2) Semi-auto. Personal preference.

3) Serviceably accurate to 250-300 yards.

4) Easy to maintain.

5) Cheap, widely available ammo.

6) Inexpensive magazines/accessories.

My vote goes to the SKS.

I voted for SKS loaded with Winchester softpoints. That should take care of most common predators two or four footed. A cheap battle pack of 100-200 FMJs on strippers could be stashed in a surplus pouch in case of sudden, unexpected SHTF (war, riot, Mike's Hard Lemonade alien paratroopers, whatever).

If you need something with a little more punch (ie. if you live in bear or couger country and fear an attach from them more than hordes of gangbangers, chicom infiltrators, zombies, etc), then a Mosin Nagant carbine would be a good substitute.

Either gun is rugged, cheap, reliable and requires little maintenace.

not enough choices i didnt see the marlin 30-30 choice up there so i am not voteing

I have to agree. My first choice would be a Marlin 336 in 30/30. My second choice would be a Remington 870P, 12 ga, Parkerized, with a 18 in barrel.

I agree that some good choices are missing, but I went with my third choice after the Marlin 336 and Rem 870 -- the Rem 700 -- 30-06, .308 and .223, my choice :) Pre-64 Win Model 70 Featherweight (.308) is fourth, that's not on the list either.

You didn't give enough choices. For me, my choice of a truck/trunk rifle would be my Lee-Enfield No. 5 Mk 1 Jungle Carbine in .303 British. I bought it for a song at a gun show over 20 years ago and it is in excellent condition. It takes 10 round magazines of full power .303 ammo, both FMJ and SP and is as slick a bolt gun as you could ask for. It will do everything I need of a truck gun and more.

.30-30win would be in my truck, but I don't have a truck anymore...but I will put the .30-30win by the bed. Some points I have about the .30-30win: Easy to shoot, available ammo almost anywhere you go, good looking design that does not frighten the anti-gun crowd, heck you look like the Lone Ranger..LOL. Quick enough follow up shots for me without semi-auto, can cover a variety of game animals when hunting and will certainly stop anyone who would wish you harm. Doesn't cost much either.
