I might vote for a 12 gauge. Range is moot in this situation, since if it is a truck gun, and you are put in a situation where you have to use it, you are obviously close to your truck. Now, assuming that this threat is at a reasonable rifle distance away, say 100 yard or more, why not just get out of there? You are at your truck. You don't have to fight your way to your truck or anything, it's just that simple.

Now, if the threat was 25 yards away and closing fast, a shotgun would be ideal.

WHAT NO LEVER ACTION IN A TRUCK GUN POLL, What has THR come to.

You already have a Bias in your poll, was your poll made up by Yugoslavian gun designers, you push the SKS and second the AK and slam the AR????  Then you have a commercial Bolt gun and 3 Milsurp bolties, and followed by the lowly M1 carbine.

First of between the AR and the AK, what ever floats your boat. Also the SKS. all good guns and have their limitations. Of those three I would like to have an underfolding AK to slam around. A nice accurate AR would be a hoot.
The Bolties would have to go back into the gun cabinet, accept the Mosin maybe. The M1 carbine would be ok but vastly underpowered compared to the rest, might be a plus for a smaller framed individual.

My personal vehicle gun is a Marlin 1894C and 2 S&W K frames with a Marlin 39Mountie and a Colt Woodsman when I can.

Up until the SKS was imported in bulk the Winchester or Marlin was the gun to have in the window of a truck and I still agree with that.

1) Cheap, verging on disposable. If I'm involved in an auto accident, the last thing I want to worry about is replacing a rifle that cost a lot of money.

2) Semi-auto. Personal preference.

3) Serviceably accurate to 250-300 yards.

4) Easy to maintain.

5) Cheap, widely available ammo.

6) Inexpensive magazines/accessories.
My vote goes to the SKS.
Ill agree, except for the range. If I have to depend on an SKS at 300 yards, Ill drive the truck a bit closer.

WHAT NO LEVER ACTION IN A TRUCK GUN POLL, What has THR come to.

That's my reaction, too. It kind of kicked me in the gut not to see a single levergun--SURELY the gun you'd find most of if you actually surveyed trucks across America--among the options.

My truck has a Marlin 1894fg, .41 mag, in a soft case behind the seats. The Honda Accord has its little brother, the 1894c in .357, in a hard case in the trunk.

I picked SKS, and AK. You won't cry too much if either one get's banged up or stolen. Plus for the most part they are going to run after being neglected in the trunk.

Marlin 30-30 for me. Best balance of any rifle I own, sufficient magazine capacity, takes a licking and keeps on ticking.

I agree with those who just can't believe that the lever action rifle is not even mentioned in this poll.

But this is a republic so we must tolerate foolishness.

By the way if you add a cartridge carrier to the butt stock of the 30-30 you have fifteen rounds available without fumbling around for a magazine. And of course the round is heavy enough for most anything out to 150-200 yards (and now even further with Hornady's plastic pointy round).

So put me down for the common sense, hard duty American rifle for my truck gun, the Marlin lever.

Yeah I know, it is not on the list. Write it in.
