It looks like I have to drop down to 9mm

Random thought popped in my head. The impulse-force theorem tells us that increasing the distance travelled during an impact will effectively reduce the force experienced during the impact (this is the basic principle of crumple zones in cars).

So a gun with a higher barrel and greater muzzle flip may be better for your shoulders, than a lower barrel that sends the impulse energy straight into your arms & shoulders. More muzzle flip = greater distance traveled during impulse.

Of course, this isn’t ideal for follow-up shots. It also may be worse on your wrists, because muzzle flip is a bending/torsional loading whereas zero flip is a compression loading.
Good observation, sir. Thank you very much!

I agree with @GunnyUSMC regarding the Glock 45. It has a G19 length slide with a G17 longer frame. I also had a 19X but gave it to my son-in-law. He stopped drooling a short time later. ;)
I also have arthritis in my right wrist, no cartilage in my left shoulder and an arthritic right shoulder and a list of other issues that don’t matter here.
I find the Glock 19 snappy but not the Glock models with the longer G17 frame.
I also tried metal framed 9mm pistols, the CZ 75 and the Hi-Power. They don’t add that much weight to mitigate the recoil. I feel the grip doesn’t fit me right and the controls on the CZ are too far up and the Hi-Power hammer bites. It’s too bad really. They were both grail guns for me until I actually shot them.
I do not recommend lighter single stacks as they will be snappy as well. I did shoot a 9mm Browning 1911. It was okay but I no longer care to carry a 1911 platform.
I would recommend finding a range and spending $50 renting guns to see what works for you. My recommendations probably won’t work for you as I have large hands and some guns just feel weird to me. I find that guns that other guys like that also have large hands often do not do it for me.

Good luck and I hope you find a pistol you can use.
On a limited, fixed income, adequately resolving this will take some time as discretionary funds are thin and saving enough will take some time. I look forward to it! ☕

If you’re thinking about a 19X, I suggest that you also look at the Glock model 45. It’s pretty much the same, but there are a few differences. The G45 has a flared magwell, takes al Gen mags, can be had with the MOS slide for mouthing a red dot. That’s just some of the differences.
I like my G45 more then my 19X.

I can use all of my Glock 17 10, 15, & 17 Gen3, Gen4 and Magpul 10 & 17 rd. mags in my 19X so I probably don’t need a flared magwell. The G45 uses the Gen5 mags with the extended lip on the baseplate, so I’d need to swap out these baseplates with the earlier ones to stay compatible with my 19X. I would wholeheartedly recommend the 19X which I like a little better than my Gen3 17 & 19. But these are all pretty good.

You have chronic joint pain....this really helps me:
3. Suggest trying a quality CBD product and taking twice per day. Make sure whatever you get is
A. made in USA from organic US grown hemp and
B. independently tested.
My source is www.lazarusnaturals.com I prefer the THC free stuff. This stuff has been a blessing to my back, neck, and shoulders: https://www.lazarusnaturals.com/shop/tinctures/blood-orange-high-potency-tincture

Good luck!

Thanks for posting this, we gave it a try. Unfortunately didn't do anything for my wife's knee and hip pain, she had to go back to taking Naprosen. I recently had a steroid injection in my neck, after my follow-up visit I'll give it a try when necessary.

Based on my own experience, CBD isn't an immediate or overnight fix. It is something a person in chronic pain should take over time and increase the “dose” of very 3-4 days until you find the right amount for the individual.

It took me a couple weeks before I started feeling solid results in the beginning.

there have been times when I stopped taking it for a week or more, and after a few weeks I start to notice increased joint pain and sleep issues. Getting back on CBD bring me back to feeling and sleeping better after taking it for a few days.

The Glock 48 is narrower in the grip, that may help with control and hand comfort. Also 15 rd mags are available and it is concealable for carry. MHO.

If it is really bad I have seen a few 1911's in 380.
Not Ideal but with +p hollow point, and your level of training adequate at SD distances.
We had a cute little Llama .380 come through the shop and it looked like someone left their 1911 out in the rain.
It was tempting, but it never whispered to me.

I work very hard for my Hamiltons and Jacksons. (What are those things called Benjamins?)
I have always told customers something I deeply believe in myself and that is the best item out of any category of items is the one that will do what you want it to do (including use-life) for the least amount of money.

Bearing that in mind, I find the Bersas to be a very good buy at the price point. Under $300 MSRP, to be able to get a gun that is very uncaring about what ammo I've run through it is just dandy IMHO.

Since you have been shooting a .45acp in a 1911---a 9mm in a 1911 makes some sense---you are familiar with that platform.

For the gun, try a Grand Power K100 with rotating barrel, 9mm, very easy recoil.

For the shoulders, try prolotherapy, a non-surgical fix.

Sounds like you've left the reloading game. If I'm wrong about this, I'd recommend the Browning Hi-Power with powder puff loads for practice and the real thing for defense.

Mine shoots powder puff 115 gr. Loads about like a revolver would and groups the empties right at my feet. Accuracy is good too. Easy gun to live with.

I would consider a GLOCK 19 an upgrade from a 1911. Just my preference and experience.

Jim

I recently bought a beautiful 6” S&W 686 Deluxe with wood grips, 7-shot. This thing is solid! Shoot .38 SPL, even +p, and it really does not kick.

I see you’re looking for a carry gun. Nm

I like steel guns, but I have no doubts that a polymer framed gun absorbs a lot of the recoil shock ! No doubt about it .
