Sounds like a domestic issue. I learned long ago if I flex on hunting a thousand minor crisises will surface and hunting gets bagged. I plan my hunts way....... in advance I black out dates. I warn everybody, relatives, work, all the crisis makers in advance I am unavailable. Second I budget more time than I actually need, so if some real emergency does come up I still have days to commit. I know it sounds hard nosed but many lost ruined hunts later thats simply how it is, I am getting older, it gets a little harder every year, and I know there are only so many good hunts left. 10 probably maybe 15, if I get bagged that is just one less. My family finally understands its important to me, and once they understood it is important to me, are generally very understanding and supportive.
But it must be a priority in your mind, cause if it isn't something will always come up. I don't do much elk hunting anymore cause these hunts take a full week at a miniumum and ten days is better. That is a hunt I can only arrange every three years or so. I know a lot of my nieghbors up north can get by with weekend only hunts, but I work away and its time off, vacation, coming back from overseas in the past. I had one elk hunt I came back from Saudi for and didn't get to hunt. I can't remember the crisis anymore just the missed hunt, my wife never asked again. If I am not going to hunt or be able to I have already discussed it with my wife, and once I start getting tags and getting dollars commited its a no cancel go.
Might not work for you, but it does for me.
