Finally found this old photo. The buck on the left shows a healing would that I know it received three weeks prior to this photo.

He got the wound from a woman shooting at a distance of about 125yds. with a .308. She happens to be one of those who think using a big(ger) caliber will somehow compensate for her lack of skill and and uncaring attitude. She and her husband (an '06 user with the same attitude) were on our lease for five years and both of them wounded and lost at least three deer for everyone they brought to bag. A few times I went out to their stand and tracked down deer they had shot and hadn't even bothered to go look for - and they were actually p-ssed at me because it forced them to use tags on deer they didn't want. They were finally invited to not return to the lease because of the number of deer they were wasting and their "couldn't-care-less" attitude.

If you look close you can see the entrance point (of the 3-wk-old shot) on the buck's right side - it shows as a small white patch. The exit wound is obviously that ghastly, scabbed-over blotch on the deer's left side.

The wound visible on the neck near the head is the exit wound of the .243 87-gr. BTHP that dropped it in its' tracks from about 170yds. a couple hours before the photo was taken.

So, what does this prove, that girls shouldn't shoot men's guns? Heck, my .308 is easy to shoot, even my 7 mag is easy to shoot. They kill things just as dead as a .243 and I like 'em, didn't buy 'em for you, bought 'em for me. I ain't a girl.

I think for .243, I'd shoot a 100 grain bullet. It's quite effective and doesn't tear up as much meat and will penetrate, especially if a hog happens into my sites. The 87 grainer is more of a varmint bullet. I got nothin' against the .243, but I just don't own one and have no reason to buy one. My bases are covered with several of the hundreds of effective caliber choices out there.

irresponsible hunting practices make us all look bad. glad you got them off your lease, and hopefully that taught them some respect for the animals they harvest.

I'm no tree hugger- but I firmly believe that an ethical hunter owes whatever game he or she harvests as clean a death as possible. these two- obviously missed the memo.

i agree with everything you said except the inferance that they would have done better with a different (smaller) caliber, sounds to me like they should just take up golf. deer shot poorly with .243, 6.5, 7mm are gonna run off just like deer shot poorly with a .338! and deer shot well (with a proper bullet) with a .243 are gonna drop just like a deer shot well with a .300 weatherby.......

No - those two (and people like them) wouldn't have done better with any caliber because their thinking and their attitude was/is so lousy.

There's a guy who used to hunt on our lease who likes a .300 Win Mag. I sure wish he'd have learned to shoot first though. Lots of wounded/lost deer because of that one.

He once shot a deer in the butt with an arrow. When I asked him why he said "that's all I could see". I then asked him if he ever considered not taking the shot. I could tell from the look on his face that it had never dawned on him that he didn't have to shoot at every thing he sees.

I used to hunt with a guy like that, I stress used to.

He would shoot at anything brown and then would get pissed when it was a doe instead of a buck. He has the worst buck fever of anyone I knew, but yet the largest thing that he had shot was a small basket rack 8 pt that he proudly displays in his office.

7 mag is a girl gun. In fact it's one of my girl guns and it has taken plenty of deer for me over the years.

Calliber is irrellevent. If you can't hit what you are aiming at - precisely and accurately - you shouldn't be shooting.

Fact, plain & simple: It's not entirely about caliber (the one selected must be characterized by ballistics performance adequate to "git-R-done," & humanely) . . . it's about being proficient with the firearm from which the bullet in that caliber is launched. Period. You can't kill what you can't hit, and you may not recover what you can't hit with accuracy.

I think hunting rifles are just like CCW's and should be practiced with to become familiar with your gun and ammo used for its intended purpose. If you won't make the time to use and shoot it properly, you shouldn't use one at all. Things around you will be safer.
