We've got a few people on THR that go to IUPUI in Indianapolis, so I thought this might be worthwhile to post.
I dropped by the IUPUI police station again today to talk to Captain True about the gun lockers they advertise as being available to CCW holders who are prohibited by University policy from carrying guns on campus. I wanted to find out what the procedure was for using them.
The first thing I learned was that the lockers were not installed yet. They had been installed in the old station, but not since they've moved. Captain True said that he expects that they'll be installed by next week, but didn't give me a specific day.
Apparently, to use the lockup, you have to fill out a form identifying who you are and what model gun. I haven't seen the form yet, but I'll try to get a copy when I go down there again. You then put the gun in the locker and take the key with you. I'm sure there's probably a master key somewhere, but I'd had some concerns about access control.
The lockers will be available 24 hours a day.
There's no loss insurance, but, to quote Mr. True, "about the only way you'd lose the gun is if the Police station would blow up."
I'll stop by again after they get the lockers put up and try it out. The station is kind of out of my way, so we'll see if I use it much or not.
