I got this old J. Stevens single shot, top break .22 from my grandpa about 45 years ago. Could anyone tell me about when it was made. Serial # 53058. Also, I've looked for parts, specifically all the pieces for the locking button, but can't find any. Does it use .22 LR rim fire bullets? Here are some pix. Thanks, TMM JS 22 - 1.jpg JS 22 - 2.jpg JS 22 - 3.jpg JS 22 - 5.jpg

It is a Stevens Model 35. The caliber should be marked on the barrel - normally .22LR. The missing parts are the locking bolt, spring and button; all of the parts which constitute the locking mechanism - the button screws onto the threaded shank of the locking bolt shaft. The pistol cannot be safely fired without the locking mechanism. Yours is an earlier pistol, with a cast trigger guard - later pistols had a sheet metal guard. Unfortunately, I can't provide a source for the missing parts, though you can find a complete list of them, with drawings, at the Numrich/GPC website, I believe. These are really nice little pistols, and yours appears to be in good shape overall, and well worth restoring, if the parts can be found. Alternatively, a really capable gunsmith should be able to make the parts you need, though he would need to fully understand their design and function. Good luck!

You know just going out of the box, if there was no sentimental value here it would be easier to just buy a better one and sell this for parts...

But because this one is special. There are more then enough beat to hell tip ups out there in the 200 range that you could buy, take out the parts you need. Sell the hulk for something. That may be your best ..

Here is a Great-white-knuckle-page-turning-can-not-put-it-down story about the Stevens and their tip ups...

Mine appears to be a later Model 35 with the stamped steel trigger guard, but my serial number is in the 24XXX range. My example has an 8" barrel and chambers .22LR. Don't know where to obtain parts, other than what indy suggests. Fortunately the one I have functions normally, seems to be all there, and I haven't had to search for any parts.

Attached a photo of mine, with the rest of my survival supplies;)

Agree model 35. Caliber is either .22 or .25 Stevens. If it has a Pope barrel, it could be a .22 Stevens-Pope. These are the only calibers listed for the model 35.
