We're nearing the end of 2017 and prices of commodities can change drastically over time. Has the prices of jacketed bullets reached near the same as the copper plated bullets? I use Xtreme CP's a lot, but if the prices are nearing the same, I'd just as soon use the jacketed. I've been looking at a place called Rocky Mountain, but don't know much about them.

Rocky Mountain Reloading is a very good company. I have used thousands of their plated bullets.
There are some good buys on jacketed bullets but plated are almost always cost less. I use a lot of coated bullets also but lately the cost of plated has been about the same. I have had good luck with both but my BHP doesn't like coated bullets so I buy mostly plated in 9mm.

@longdayjake has been a member here for years and he owns RMR. He is a stand up guy and has good prices. I bought from him before and would have no problem doing so again.

Personally, I have no issues with plated so that is what I use since they are a little cheaper.

I also use RMR. Their fmj are made in house by them and are just as cheap as everyone elses plated. They are consistent in size and weight too.

I get most of my handgun bullets from RMR. Great people to to business with.
Relaly like thier bullets.
They offer THR members a 5% discount with the code, and I have a 10% code that Jake gave me for the new 124gr 9mm MPR JHPs
PM me if you are interested in the codes.
RMR offers free shipping so if you have to pay shipping on plated from someplace else you need to add that in to your total cost.

I have bought from them a couple times. Great place to deal with and bullets were as good as anywhere else if not better.

I used to shoot Extreme plated in 9mm but for the same price i can get RMR 124gr Jacketed bullets and its helping out a small business which i like doing. You cant go wrong with RMR.

I'm not a huge fan of plated bullets and can find jacketed that are just a few pennies more than plated, or use my home cast. I have been able to shoot accurate, non leading cast bullets in 90% of my guns and almost all of my jacketed purchased bullets have been very good as to quality (not necessarily premium bullets either. I have run few thousand Rocky Mountain Reloading bullets through my semi-autos). I have had good service from RMR and have used several hundred JHPs for my 9mm "just in case stash". For me the only advantage for using plated bullets are cleaner fingers (?) and if I got some free...

I agree it's not hard to find quality jacketed bullets for about the same money as plated these days. Also in my mind plated should be cheaper and when it's not that affects my buying decision.

RMR has very good quality 9mm FMJs and an expanding HP that they produce. They are priced very fairly - around 7.5 cents apiece for 124 gr. FMJs and 9 for the 124gr. HP in lots of 1,000, using the applicable THR discounts mentioned by Dudedog. At normal prices plated costs as much or more, and I don't know of any other quality expanding hollowpoint at RMR's price level.

I actually prefer plated as I do what I can to limit my lead exposure as I am sensitive to it. I shoot outdoors these days and do use some FMJs but prefer plated for my bulk shooting. Xtreme has clearance sales on their plated stuff which are sold as cosmetic blems, but the first 6K I got from them looked awesome. They are priced at 30% off their normal prices and sold in lots of 1,000. I've ordered the 9mm-115HP and 135HP for 5.5 cents per, the .38-125HP for 6.4, and the .38-158HP for 7.5 cents each. 16K headed my way in the latest lot. They are quality and at these prices they are the cheapest projectiles I can purchase. When this is not an option I buy FMJs from RMR or another reliable outfit called Everglades.

I thought I seen this about jacketed prices being about the same. My next order I'll try this company out.

PM me if you are interested in the codes.
I'll get back with you about these codes Dudedog; probably be after the 1st of the year. This new press and accessories has me spent pretty much till then.

Ha, ha... I know what you mean. I like the SWC's in lead for my .45, but if I load a lot of them, I'm wearing the harbor freight rubber gloves.

Yea, back in the day plated was not much more than lead which was far cheaper than jacketed. The plated got popular and has become more expensive, as has lead. I agree, plated should be cheaper. And some 100 count lead goes for jacketed prices. Crazy.

I think the plated manufacturers have been gradually creeping up on their profit margins, and people like Jake at RMR are working very hard at offering great FMJ values at the same time. Combine the two, and the jacketed premium is no more.

The gap between plated and jacketed, except for name brand "premium" stuff, has closed appreciably in the last year since the craziness and shortages have caught up.

I don't bother with plated. If I need a cleaner handling and shooting bullet but don't want to pay for a jacketed bullet, I buy coated bullets.

I've been very happy with RMR plated and jacketed bullets...they have completely replaced anything I used to buy from Xtreme. Consistency of bullets and standing behind their product is just taken to a different level.

Their shipping is really top notch. I usually receive shipments from RMR, before Xtreme would even ship...and I don't have to wait for "Free Shipping", because it is included in the RMR price

When RMR doesn't make a bullet I need for competition ( 160-170gr, .358" RN) I go with a Hi-Tek coated bullet from BnB Casting. Coated bullets have taken over the price point that plated bullets used to hold

I disagree with your second sentence. Obviously, my experience with Xtreme bullets and customer service has been different than yours. Can't quarrel with the rest of your post, though.

I've had my reservations about Xtreme also. There's been times when I ordered from them, waited a couple of weeks, then called to see what was going on to find out that they claimed to have had a very large order and would get my order out as soon as possible. Kinda left a bad taste in my mouth. I still have a boat load of their bullets, but I am open to different suppliers now.

Actually my last order from Xtreme took 3 weeks to get to my door for "in stock". I didn't gripe, I was not in a rush but not what I was expecting as a customer as well. I do like their quality for the plated but I have come onto Bayou coated bullets and they are quickly becoming my favorite for revolvers where I don't worry about them getting chipped/dinged/banged upon autoloader loading.

I just bought about 2000 of the RMR 115 gr FMJ 9mm and plan on switching to those once I finish up my 9mm plated Ranier bullets. they ran around 7-8 cents a projectile roughly the same price as the plated bullets from RMR as well and I think both of these prices was cheaper than I purchased the Rainier plated bullets from midway USA. I dont see why I would use a plated bullet if I can get a jacketed bullet for the same price. Just checked on Rocky Mountain reloading and the jacketed bullets are $79 per 1000 and plated are $78 per 1000. Would be interested if anyone feels plated is better than jacketed.

^^^I tend to agree, except in the case of Speer's Deep Curl and Gold Dot line of plated bullets. Kinda the principle driving force behind the idea of plated bullets is their cost. While some may obtain accuracy close to jacketed, most do not even come close to the terminal performance of jacketed. Thus, for the most part, plated is delegated to shooting paper with "good enough" accuracy at a reduced cost over jacketed or even quality hard cast. When you get to performance close to jacketed, you get a price close to jacketed, i.e., Speer's Gold Dot/ Deep Curl line.

Xtreme is routinely slow to ship these days. When I ordered two months ago it took 2 weeks for the orders to ship. I ordered just over a week ago and they took a week. I placed another order a couple of days ago - who knows how long it will take given the holidays.

I only buy from Xtreme in large lots from their clearance sales, and the prices are so good I can wait. They just aren't cheap enough at normal prices, and if I paid that much and it took weeks to ship, that would certainly affect my decisions. Definitely no such problem with RMR.

Actually I was talking about lube getting on my fingers from handling cast bullets, not the evil, murderous lead...:p
