Job openings at Remington.

Remington operates an ammo manufacturing facility in Lonoke, AR (just east of Little Rock) and in today's paper were two job postings.

1. Industrial Machinist. Must have 5 years experience with high tolerance lathe, drill press and milling work. "Excellent salary and benefits."

2. Industrial Mechanic. Must have 5 years experience/education in troubleshooting and repairing a variety of industrial machinery. "Excellent salary and benefits."

Both ask applicants for a resume and salary requirements.

I suspect these two positions can have a major impact on their quality - but this is their ammo plant, and I have never had issues with their ammo
 
i filled out apps on remington's site for about a year. "jobs openings" at remington are nothing new. don't expect a response. you don't even get a confirmation email to let you know your app got through to them half the time.

like many companies, they must fill them all locally. not sure why they even bother to advertise them on their website. who's going to drive from another state only to interview for a $10/hour job?

I can only quote the ad that appeared in the local paper. Being this is Arkansas the salary may be lower than what would be offered elsewhere. Wages in this state are lower than the national average. But I would rather be an employed worker at $10 an hour than an unemployed $20 per hour worker. Call me kooky. Also bear in mind that the real estate ads are full of 3 bedroom homes with a 20x20 shop in the backyard priced at $80,000 so it's not all bad here.

I assume they would like to hire locally but I posted this in case anyone was interested. I have no connection to Remington, I only saw the ad.

You done a good thing by posting those positions!! Those that question the pay or benefits may have never been jobless or unemployed long enough.

Like they say " If You Have To Ask You Don't Understand."

I'm qualified for either position. Problem is east of Little Rock, delta country. I've spent half my life in Arkansas and call it home. I'm of the hillbilly Arkie subset. :) Hillbillies and Delta Boys don't get along very well.

As for the wages in Arkansas. They can be lower than other parts of the country. But so is the cost of living. Housing and land use to be dirt cheap until the Yankee's started retiring there and driving the cost up as they bad mouthed everybody.

I'm looking forward to retiring in Hog Heaven. :)
 
psyshack- Lonoke is only about 15 miles east of Little Rock. Far short of the delta area.
 
Heard a radio ad recently for long term temp positions, with potential to become permanent, working for Ruger.
Maybe a good sign.

You clearly don't buy their 22LR ammo. :)

There is talk that things are going to pick up substantially in the next 6 months. It is a good sign to see a job listing at Remington and perhaps Ruger.
 
Lonoke is flat but is pretty close to the Little Rock/North Little Rock area. There is at least a new Wal Mart Supercenter in Lonoke. You can live in North Little Rock, Jacksonville, Cabot and drive to Lonoke to work if you don't like Lonoke.
 
If one is willing to settle for a $10 an hour job that is their business.
I couldn't justify moving for that rate of pay.

As an "Industrial machinist" with more than five years experience, I can also tell you I command and receive quite a bit more than $10 an hour for my labors.

I was also laid off in 2009, called back in 2010 and my rate of pay has increased since then, not decreased.

Mine was a legitimate question and not intended to upset those willing to accept low wages.
 
Machinist jobs are not generally $10/hr jobs. But it is true that wages tend to be lower in the South. Most of the Southern states are also right to work states. Tis part of the reason that many companies (VW, Nissan, Toyota, Kia, Mercedes, Boeing, etc.) have built plants in southern states. The cost of living also tends to be less. Everything is inter-related, but if a company pays you $20 a hour in NJ or $15 a hour in GA... from the company's perspective... it is still a $5 difference regardless of cost of living considerations.
 
Onmilo- Speculation on salary for these positions. Not stated in ad. I was using the $10 figure for discussion, not suggesting that's what these positions pay.

I knew this woman one time who had a very high opinion of herself. Thought she was some sort of gift to the world (and to men, BTW). One time she said "I would never even CONSIDER taking a minimum wage job!"

I replied: "You've never been hungry, have you?"

I've worked my share of low paying jobs. For about 5 years after graduating with my masters degree I worked as a store clerk, truck driver, and warehouse helper. Then I started getting better offers. That was a long 5 years.

A year after receiving my doctorate I got fired. Took the first job I could find which happened to be a minimum wage position. My philosophy is that anything is better than nothing. Took about 2 months to move onward and upward. It would be another 4 years before I finally settled in the job I wanted.

You do what you have to do. I've been up and down. Had a lot of different jobs. Been fired more times than I can count. Through it all I never sought unemployment, food stamps, or any sort of financial assistance. Never took any grants or loans as a student, either. Paid my way as I went. Graduated debt free and that's how I live my life. If I don't have the cash in my pocket then I don't need it. No car loans or outstanding credit card balances. Only loan is the mortgage and that will be paid off 20 years early.

SaxonPig, I have a very high opinion of myself and have also spent three months homeless in Austin Texas WHILE still working during the four years I lived there.
Like I said, do what you have to do.
I have never had to accept less than what I expected of anything either.

My guess is those jobs will pay based on experience and/or what the market is willing to accept.
Accept the job @ $10 an hour and you just screwed yourself, good machinists are getting fewer and farther between now.

People complain about immigrant labor taking the jobs while expressing disgust at the jobs "Nobody is willing to do", jobs like roofer, carpenter, bricklayer, garbageman, and yes, machinists.
 
Um... isn't staying broke screwing yourself worse than accepting a $10 job?
 
I have friends that work for Remington at Lonoke and I think the industrial mechanics and machinists make $18 or so an hr. Not bad, but not good either. Beats @7/hr. and flipping burgers. Just sayin'.;)

sure, if it's local and you need work, of course go for it.

however, they advertise on their website where anyone in the country can apply. you may drive for hours just for an interview and not even get the job.

i got called for two interviews at 2 different gun companies, which would have been a dream job, but only paid $10-$11/hour, and i would have had to drive 15-17 hours just for the interview, which obviously may or may not lead to a job. too far to go when it's not a sure thing, and too little money anyway.
