I wonder how many people know this? I bet the DNC would prefer that they never hear about it.

I found this in the American Rifleman, May 1961 issue.

I knew it. It's also interesting that Oswald ordered the rifle he used to kill JFK from an advertisement in the NRA's American Rifleman magazine.

It is nice that he accepted the offer of a "free" life membership, though if Kennedy was really pro 2A you would think he would have joined anyway, it's not like he couldn't afford it.

I really like it when things like this get dug up about liberals and Democrats, especially when Rush L. quotes JFK on tax policy, it sends his liberal radio listeners ballistic.

Interesting that the NRA only had 400000 members in 1961.

I'd really love to send that to the Brady Campaign, Violence Policy Center, etc.-all the folks who make a living accusing the NRA of being "extremist."

I was thinking to email this to Rush L. but you have to be a member of the 24/7 club and it's not that important to me to join just to email him this. Hope someone who reads this thread is a member of Rush's club then maybe they could email this to Rush. It would be fun to see something like this get real national exposure.

Langenator:

Check your Email for PDF version... I rather doubt that they would open an attachment..but best of luck..

Rush knows. This is not news. Finding the original article is cool, though.

JFK makes a lot of our current Republicans look like bleeding heart liberals.

1961 was a much different time.
Comparing the Democrats of then to todays weasels can't be done.

Most D's admire Kennedy but don't really have a clue to his thinking or policies. They just hear the word Democrat.

What would really count is if Wayne sent a life membership to Ted "The swimmer" and he accepted.

Nice gesture by Orth, but it doesn't mean much in today's world.

Didn't the NRA always give life memberships to the Presidents until Carter? Also, I think they presented a nice rifle to JFK too.

"Today, we need a nation of Minutemen, citizens who are not only prepared to take arms, but citizens who regard the preservation of freedom as the basic purpose of their daily life and who are willing to consciously work and sacrifice for that freedom.
By calling attention to 'a well regulated militia,' the 'security' of the nation, and the right of each citizen 'to keep and bear arms,' our founding fathers recognized the essentially civilian nature of our economy. Although it is extremely unlikely that the fears of governmental tyranny which gave rise to the Second Amendment will ever be a major danger to our nation, the Amendment still remains an important declaration of our basic civilian-military relationships, in which every citizen must be ready to participate in the defense of his country. For that reason I believe the Second Amendment will always be important."
-John F. Kennedy
The quote in question.
Can you imagine ANY POLITICIAN running for President today uttering those words???

Pro-Second Democrats were very common at that time, as was the acceptance of gun ownership.

Here's a quote from the very liberal Hubert Humphrey:

"Certainly one of the chief guarantees of freedom under any government, no matter how popular and respected, is the right of the citizen to keep and bear arms. This is not to say that firearms should not be very carefully used and that definite rules of precaution should not be taught and enforced. But the right of the citizen to bear arms is just one more safeguard against a tyranny which now appears remote in America, but which historically has proved to be always possible."
