I was out at a local gun shop the other day looking for a new handgun. Nothing real specific but I just wanted something new. After looking at the usual Glocks and XDs and so on, I decided that since I already have 3 autoloaders it was time for a revolver. I decided that a good starting point would be 357Mag. So after handling various S&W, Taurus and Ruger revolvers I settled on a Ruger GP100 with the 6" barrel and the wood grips!! The Ruger just felt right in my hands. I can't wait to shoot it!!!

One question though, the only hand gun calibers I've shot have been 9mm, .40SW and .45ACP, what should I expect as far as recoil with the 357Mag?

With full-load .357s they are potent beasts with a kick to match. I shoot more .38s in mine than anything as it's much cheaper and more comfortable...

since you got a nice heavy large framed revolver I would say the recoil will be no problem. of course felt recoil will have alot to do with what bullets you are shooting. if you feed your GP100 a diet of 158 gr then it will have noticeably more recoil than a diet of 125gr.

Heh. You've got a lot of weight up front with that GP's 6" full underlug.
From my experience with a 4" model, I can tell you that .38 was very light. full house .357 was still very controllable in the 4". With 6" i'd bet you can shoot the hottest there is, and do so all day long.

Edit to comment on the post above:

I find 158gr loads to be more comfortable than 125's. I think 125's have a harsher kick while 158s are a shove.

That would be my experience as well...

I sure do!

I'm waiting until October. Me, the g/f and a bunch of buddies are going up to my g/f's parents house in Minnesota and bringing all my guns with. It;s going to be good times! I'm stockpiling ammo until then. :D

I have the GP100 in a 4" barrel and regularly shoot the 158 gr. magnum loads. I actually enjoy the recoil - it feels like a real gun! I don't mind it at all, and find the gun to be very accurate. I practice at 25 yards. I debated about getting the 6" model, but chose the 4" for what I was using it for. Great gun - I hope you enjoy it.

You didn't "settle on" anything. It's a fantastic gun that is a pussycat to shoot.

PirateRadio,
You have a new gun and you are actually going to wait until October to shoot it?? Can you really wait that long? I know there's no way I could wait over 2 months to shoot a new gun, especially such a nice revolver like a 6" GP100.

Seriously, you can wait that long??? Really??? :banghead:
